If I'm not mistaken that is really a factory 440 car right, that someone installed a HEMI in back in the late 70's? Or am I thinking of a different car Dave?

hemigeno

Oooohh, Cherry Bomb mufflers - that is a sweet sound with a Hemi!

Looks like another Vinyl-top aero car too - do you know much more about the history of this car, Dave?

69_500

I think that I have some black and white photo's of that car around here somewhere. Wasn't it in a the Winged Warriors newsletter about a year ago?

were you digging through some old magazines last night or something Dave? Just wondering, love the photo's and such that your posting. Everytime I'm at a swap meet and I see a stack of old mags I dig through them to find any aero car stories. If I find one I buy the magazine.

Dave, I thought the Bullet Hole Daytona was bought by Monroe Schellinger out of the Detroit Michigan area?  That's not to say it didn't come from MO before that, but I remember the story Doug posted about that car from the "Vintage Pictures" monster thread on Moparts.

I think that the bullet hold Daytona that was Dougs Dad's was from Michigan but after Monroe sold it it went to your area of the country Gene. I think that is what Dave was trying to say.

*doh*   :slap:

Doug did say that the car had come a long way in how it looks.  Very well could have been.  Jeff Phillips went through some Daytonas, that's for sure!  Kirksville's about 2-1/2 to 3 hours north of here, and I've unfortunately not met him.

The car is XX29L9B386539.   My dad bought car in the fall of 1977 from a guy in Pontiac Michigan.  The sellers name was Chris.   He had been a DSAC club member, and at some point in time had to sell the car very quickly.   Dad flew over to look at the car, and was going to drive it back.  But the car was so bad, he turned it down.  Even for the time, it was in bad shape.  The car was painted a copper metallic with a flat black nose and black painted roof.  It had a 383 that was leaking badly.  Quarters were full of bondo.  It had a snow tire on the right front.   Rusty Rocket Racing wheels on the back.  The back seat was covered with black fun fur.  It was just a real POS.   However, the nose was real nice, and since Chris, the seller would not take no for an answer, dad offered him $1100 and Chris said yes.   He would not explain the bullet hole in the middle of the drivers door.

So now he's got a problem in that he has to get the car back to Milwaukee from Detroit.    He fills up the car with gas, and pulls the stick to check the oil, and the whole tube came out with it.  An omen of things to come...

After filling the oil and checking the gas, off he goes.   It's late afternoon, and he's on the north side of Detroit.   The heater lines are disconnected, so the only warmth coming into the car is from the driveline.   After about an hour, it's getting dark.   He remembers Chris mumbling something about the vacuum to the headlights not working.  So he looks in the map pockets and finds a couple of rubber door stops to wedge into place.

The next problem is that the alternator is not charging,  By the time he gets to Ann Arbor on the south west side of town, he notices the lights are starting to get dim.  He pulls off the interstate and into a gas station, and the car dies.   The boys at the station come out to look at the car, and tell him, "no problem", we'll get it fixed in the morning, and that there is a Ramada Inn across the street.   Dad says "ok" and heads over there to make a reservation.

Then it hits him - "RAMADA INN" in Ann Arbor!!!   No !!!!!!   This was the Ramada we had a national meet at the summer before.  It was bad.  90 degrees plus.  Air broke in the hotel.  Pool was green and out of order.     Aside from the fact he didn't need the air in November, the pool was still green.

Anyway, they got him fixed in the morning, and he made the rest of the trip to Milwaukee in good shape.    He sold the car a few months later to Jeff Phillips in Missouri, who restored it to the magazine appearance.  Even though it was pimped out, Jeff did an amazing job with what he had to work with.  Then it went to New York, and I've lost track of it since then.

I will see if I can find some pics of it in its feral state.   It was a real gem.

Doug,

Thanks for posting those details again!  I didn't remember from the Moparts thread that the car had gone to Missouri, but that makes sense now.

P.S.  I just sent you an email - I need your mailing address to send you some copies I made this week of some good stuff from Anthony Young.

Would it have really been a bullet hole in the upright to the wing or just the typical hole that forms over years from a bad form and having a pit in it. I've seen multiple wings with a hole in them over the years, and most of them form in about the same place on the wing uprights.

In some cases it would have been a casting defect .But they found and removed the slug

Which one?  The one that Doug's dad used to own, or the Retro/custom Daytona (Dave's link doesn't work anymore on the latter)?

I have pics of the car as we bought it in 1977, and after Jeff restored it, but will have to dig.   By the standard of the rusty burned up Daytona that sold this summer, this car was a gem.   But by 1977 standards, it was in tough shape.   It did have a good 8-track copy of Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" that came with the car though.

The good pics of the car are packed away.  All I could find is the slimy engine bay.  I had forgotten it had a 383 in it.    If it wasn't mentioned, this was an A4 silver car.   This was taken in the fall of 1977.
