Considering it still has all the glass, and isnt painted like a ricer, it may not have been in a derby  :yesnod:

Please note that the station wagon has hubcaps on it. :scratchchin:

I've never seen a derby where they leave the hubcaps on.

The Chevy is set up like a dirt track car, not a derby car. :scope:

My guess is the station wagon and the Superbird ( pace car? ) were parked in the infield at the dirt track when the Chevy got loose, ran off the track and slammed into them. :Twocents:

With the bird being lettered up.
My money is on it being a pace car.

Buddy of mine said years ago there was a real superbird in a demo derby in Ionia MI.  I doubt he has photos, but him and his brother have owned several birds so I tend to believe his story.

I agree with the above comments, and it appears to be a Pace Car getting hit by an out of control dirt track late-model.

If you look closely, you can see what appears to be tracks where the stock car was sliding sideways into the (2) parked cars.

There is not a single car in that photo that is a derby car. 606 is a stock car.
The guys on the stationwagon forums need to get out to race track more often.

They'd have to stop and ask for directions.

to be fair it was posted in a vintage photo thread with no caption. it was I who assumed derby. its a long thread (1080 pages) with heaps of cool pics from 50s to 70s. so didn't really look to see if cars had hub caps etc. i'm only 700 pages in - better get back to it  :icon_smile_big:
