What part of the Project have you been putting off?

Lord Warlock

It seems like the charger is an endless series of little projects to address, some have been put off longer than others.  For instance, in 1989-1991 I took the calipers off of the charger, thinking I would take them in to have rebuilt, only then the brake calipers weren't available, as I found out, this being before the internet I looked for alternate brake systems, and even bought a MP front brake kit, but after looking at the single piston calipers, I put off doing the necessary brake job, the car got set aside for a decade, and didn't get moved much because there were no brakes up front, and the rears eventually locked up from inactivity, moisture, and rust, making the car less mobile.  I did start the car once a year or maybe 2 but it always seemed to start whenever battery was attached.  Years passed, and eventually I got started working on the charger again hoping to get it roadworthy, and the main holdback still remains the brakes.  I am sure i can get the car to run, and maybe drive forward and backward, but I really want to be able to stop the car where i want to before i attempt to move it again.

Recently In preparation for this task, I ordered new brake lines, fearing old brake fluid would have degraded enough to be worrisome, that process led to me disassembling the rear brakes, realizing the rear hubs were stuck on the pads, attempted wheel pullers, heat, brute strength, then a grinder, ruined an axle, got new axles, new drum kits and new drums, put those on, then dropped the gas tank to get rid of old fuel in the tank, realized the trunk floor needed to be fixed while the tank was out, so cut out the old trunk, welded in new, installed new gas tank, new fuel lines from tank to pump, then pump to carb.  Had the headliner installed, then put in the back glass myself, and today had the windshield installed with new glass.

As the project has progressed, I'm now coming up against my old nemesis, I had already replaced the stock rotors in front, and ran the brake lines to the wheelwells, still have to attach the hoses and calipers, so when the wife's car had a blower motor problem, I took the calipers in to be inspected by a brake shop, and found out not to use the calipers I had expected to use, a set we had sent off to have rebuilt in the 90s, the order got lost and they sent these in as a replacement, the new shop said they wouldn't recommend installing these calipers so I went out and ordered new ones, they'll be in this Friday.  It looks like i will finally get around to working on the front brakes this coming weekend, so a project i began over 20 years ago, I intend to finally check it off the list, and maybe, just maybe, once the brakes work again I'll be ready to drive it short distances and longer trips as I start to trust the car.  I'm sure there will be several new projects to start, but hopefully will not allow these projects to go on longer than a couple months each.

The part of my project I have been putting off is the last one.  When I figure out what that is I will get to it.

Dash wiring harness.  My problem is I spend money on everything but buying the harness.

You know, the important stuff like Cal Tracs, new wheels/tires, stereo, Gear Vendors, loop & tied frame.

It's a true 70k mile rig so the wiring's not real brittle yet & not full of splices.  I want to upgrade the alternator but can't until the wiring handles it.

sanders7981

Hmmm... Um I would have to say the wiring.  I ran my painless wiring, but haven't spliced in all the old connectors.

Ghoste

I guess for me it would just be driving it and making a list of the little projects.

Well the 69 has been back on the road almost 2 years now. I got a couple of small leaks I need to fix. Biggest thing (to me anyways) is a repair I need to make on the paint. I got a bad chip/crack in the paint on the quarter near the door. Its gonna take some sanding, and I will have to paint a spot and do a blend. Been putting that off.

Too bad you weren't closer so you could bring whatever you wanted over & I'd do it for FREE just to keep me busy.  That's the one thing I enjoy doing, is polishing.

I hit all the window trim at least twice a summer.  I mask off the body next to said trim with blue tape so I can use a really light emery or scuff pad for the 1st time & then the Mother's aluminum polish each time after.  Once you get on top of it, it's really easy to keep it glowing.

It has all bee removed from the car, I can send it to you!  The real problem is that in its 44 years of life, it has scratches that need sanding and that is the part I got sick of... I have the buffer and various compounds but I am sick of sanding!

All new windows in and having to do final adjustments to get them sitting right, do have an excuse as I have been in hospital ,but will have to eventually do   :faint:

I keep putting off making a fortune to pay for everything I wanna build.

Lord Warlock

+1 on making the fortune part...same here.  I know i have plenty of more work ahead of me, I don't count putting it off if I didn't try to start the project already, but that's just me.  Soon I'll be faced with the inside of the car, electricals, heater box refit, new door and roof weatherstripping, and even starting to think of stereo options.  i.e. building a custom removable console to house stereo gear, and then the dash cluster, I forsee procrastination in my future regarding the instrument cluster.  Especially if it seems to work after sitting idle for so long.  Also have a dash pad to install, may have to basically strip the dash and not looking forward to that.

My custom dash.  I watch my gauges a lot when I drive, they're an important part of my driving experience be it in the Charger or something newer like my '97Z28, and I've got this ptifiul looking dash, half of the gauges not working and with substitute gagues slung underneath the dash.  How hard is it to buy aftermarket gauges, buy some sheetmetal, drill some holes, hook everything up and mount it?  Apparently it's going to take a miracle to get this project done...

I need to get my wipers working. They haven't worked for me, ever!  The trunk floor needs to be replaced too someday.  As a matter of fact, I'm going to send out my wiper motor this week to get restored.  Thanks for helping me spend my money.  :icon_smile_blackeye:

I changed out the under dash wiring harness in no time at all (1.5-2 hrs).  As you offered, if you were closer I would do it for ya as I'm sure it is a tricky task for you.  The key to buying that harness is waiting until Year One has their 30% off sale.  Mine was a mess under the dash, so I was happy to see it go.

don duick

oil pump stopped working and did not realise, the engine ran for about 15 minutes without oil pressure.  the car was parked for about 10 years before I  rebuilt the motor.
Imagine if you just bought a charger which only needed a couple of minor repairs to be drivable again. You will have them fixed in no time.
No matter how small a job, if you don't want to do it,  you never will.

The gator roof. The car needs to be streetable so I can drive it somewhere to have one custom fitted as a stock one won't fit. Also the seat covers. That is going to cost a fortune..

When I purchased the car it came with no pinon snubber. Went to put on on, broken bolt was why is was missing. Ugggg this one will be fun :o

Lord Warlock

The gator roof does have an attraction for me, maybe if the current tan top gets damaged i'll think about it.

I've lost two motors to faulty oil pump drive shaft on bottom of the distributor.  Killed the original 440 numbers matching motor, and the 383 I put in after that and before i put in the last motor a 440 out of another charger r/t.  In my case the screen in the oil pickup was damaged and let small teflon chunks from the timing chain to get up into the oil pump, which promptly snapped the shaft.

ACUDANUT

Back N Black

All done, it took me 5 years to do a complete nut and bolt restoration and driving her for the last 3 years. I did order a RTR firecore distributor, can't wait to install. :2thumbs:

bull

I've put the side glass/mechanisms off until now. It's essentially the last thing I have to do before the car is finished and the rear seat and door panels can be installed. I started on the side glass about 5 years ago and decided it was not the right time. Looking back I think it was probably the right decision to do the glass toward the end of the project. And of course it has turned out to cost me a lot more than I thought it would. You'd think after owning this thing for ten years I would have figured this out by now...

Lord Warlock

Picked up the new calipers today, so hoping to get them on tomorrow, provided it isn't raining too hard.  (its garaged but the jack would stick out some).  Hoping to eliminate the longest running backlog item soon.

Lord Warlock

scratch that one off the checklist :) hooked up the front brake lines to the calipers, and installed the calipers.  One of them fought me a bit, one of the pistons came out and messed around with it an hour trying to put it back in, finally got it together, put the new pads in and installed the calipers on the car.  For the first time in 20 years, it has 4 all new brakes, still won't move for a bit as I need to bleed the system, and that won't be till Next week.  Have some touch up painting to do, then have to decide if I want to clearcoat it or just leave the single stage alone.
