OK...I used Royal Purple break in oil for my 440 engine break in....Now what

What Oil can I buy off the shelf that is common ...
1 is Synthetic ok to use...or do I need ZDDP added

2 I heard of guys running diesel oil........is this ok...

3 what is recommended ??

Is the Royal Purple a synthetic? If so, that was a mistake to use for a break in oil. You want a NON detergent, conventional oil for break in. The synthetic is too slippery and won't allow the piston rings to seat properly.
After break in, the type of oil you use sorta depends on the cam you have. If you're running a flat tappet cam, you'd be wise to use Valvoline VR1, Joe Gibbs, Brad Penn or any other high zinc oil. I have a flat tappet solid cam and I pour in a bottle of the Comp cams break in supplement with the oil.
If you have a roller cam, you have more freedom with your choices. You do not need the high zinc oils with a roller cam. You could run what new cars run.

thanks!....The Royal Purple I used is a "break in Oil" for first time starts...after break in I need to change it ...I also added the comp cam break in assembly lube on everything
from royal purple website

Engine builders have grown increasingly concerned that many modern motor oils do not provide adequate wear protection for new engines, particularly those using flat-tappet cams. Royal Purple has addressed this issue by developing a new engine break-in oil.

Royal Purple Break-in Oil is formulated to allow optimal ring seal and protect rotating assembly components such as the camshaft and valve train from initial start up wear. Royal Purple combines highly refined mineral oil, preferred for engine break-in, with advanced additives containing high levels of zinc and phosphorus to optimize protection in flat-tappet and roller engines.

Royal Purple Break-in Oil is fully formulated and does not require the use of any other chemical additives. Royal Purple recommends using their high performance motor oils after the engine is broken in for maximum engine performance.

I will look for the other oils you mentioned  :2thumbs:

Steve, see if you can locate some Brad Penn oil.....it's loaded with all the good stuff and you don't need to supplement it with any EP additives.  ;)

I have a local Stinson gas station that carries BP oil products.  :2thumbs:

X2 for bradd penn. Good stuff.... and its green! Lol. Choose your viscocity based on your build. You want good oil pressure but not overkill. How tight is your build? A 10w-30 or 10w-40 is usually plenty.
