I usually get the guy who claims to have had a '69 Charger convert in high school only theirs had the 440 hemi. The last guy who told me that said he was sure of his facts because he was an ASE mechanic at Pep Boys. I asked if it weren't more of an ASS mechanic, he wasn't happy. (Why do those guys think that an ASE makes them all knowing?)

Just smile and consider the fool who argues with fools.

I get basicly this alot.... "What year is that"   "71"   "Oh I had one just like that cept mine had a hemi"  only made a handfull with a hemi but I think I've met every 71 hemi owner and they live in the toronto area...

QuoteIt's not so much that they don't know much, it's that they act like they know a lot more than you.  I had a guy come up to me while I was working on my Charger and say "Is that a Mustang?"  It was funny, but the rest of the conversation went fine.  He just didn't know much about muscle cars, but he didn't act like a know-it-all, and he show interest in checking out the car.

Had a guy ask me if it was a mustang too. I politly told him it was a charger. He said it shares alot of the same body lines.... With people like this i just be polite. Its like you said donsnt know much just showing interest and thats cool. If you dont know you dont know dosnt hurt to ask

Well, now you know.  All this time you thought you had a Charger and hung out on a Charger website.      generalmotors/GTO.com      :icon_smile_wink:

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

Yeah, it happens.  The average "non-car-guy" or girl these days has no idea of the faux pas they're committing when they mistake a Mopar for a Chevy.  They just see the car and try to relate it to names of other "old musclecars" they've heard of.

You think this stuff is bad?  Try driving a General Lee replica around.

I've been told my ('69) Charger is the wrong year for the GL more times that I can count.  I've been told my car should have a black interior, and 6-speed Hemi, and a Ford 9-inch axle, and the door handles should be shaved off . . . I've even been informed once that the real General Lee was a '67 Pontiac Catalina!

lol.   His rice probably has more horsepower since he hack sawed his muffler in half, and it sounds better too.

I had my Charger in a car show last Saturday. A woman comes by (she was by herself) and tells me she had a '70 Charger years ago but after she got married her husband made her sell it. I asked her in a kidding way why she had married a guy like that and she just looked at me rather dumbfounded and walked away.

It does happen a lot, but I just nod my head in agreement & act polite. It isn't worth arguing with this crowd for obvious reasons.

So does your car really have a 350?  :D

EXACTLY what I do. It is easier to agree than to fight stupid.

I get the make/model confusion, but the question I get the most are.

1. When are you going to paint it?
2. After telling them it's only got a 318 engine in it, When are you going to put a Hemi in it?
3. I'll give you (make up a lowball offer)  $1500.00 for it....

I've invested the usual countless hours and several thousand dollars in things you don't see, that allow you to drive it reliably. Paint will be the LAST thing it gets.

I'm not going to be chasing horsepower on this one. Just want a nice cruiser so the 318 stays... especially since it's been rebuilt.

My answer to the buy it guys are, So would I.. all day anyday.

Having owned cars across the board; Ford, GM, and Mopar.  I've heard all the stupid questions/comments from all walks of car people.

1st, you get the Mopar guys with NoCar.  They'll rag on your Charger, when the best they've ever owned or driven was a clapped out Duster back in the 80's.  Gotta love running into those gems at the track...

2nd, the GM guys...  Anything not bow-tie is lesser in their opinion.  Even if you own one as well, they'll still get on you for owning a Ford (which unfortunately for them is faster, and handles better then ANYTHING they own).  My best example:  I went to visit a friend I hadn't seen in a while.  She loves my T-bird, but her chump of a boyfriend at the time was a chevy guy.  So this guy basically down talks my car to no end, right up until I call him out on it.  "So you're driving a clapped out Dodge Durango, where's your car?" ...  And wait for it ...  Best response ever ...  Still waiting??? ...  "I've got a 96 Cavalier that will spank that!" ...  No words...  just  :pity:

3rd, the Mustang guys.  If it's not a stang, why bother right?  At least I've always had a fox-body T-bird, so they'll show some respect.  End of the day my driveline usually trumps the 306/302 with bolt-on accessories they have anyway.  Sure they'll say something stupid though.  Worst guys for me in the sect, are the 2.3Turbo crowd.  They're quick to bash me for ripping it out of mine, but can't really come back when I show them my power #'s, and track slips.

Now, don't take this as me claiming my cars are better then theirs.  I've encountered many from all scenes that do in fact drive better / faster cars.  Only those guys are the ones with class that you can actually talk shop with, without all the BS or political bias that comes with branding.  Show me a real car guy, and I can almost guarantee he's legit cool.

We all are.

And on that note, to hell with everyone and their opinions about your car; as long as you're happy, that's all that matters...

I was showing my father in-law my Charger project and he asks what engine am I going to put in it. So I tell him the 440 is at the machine shop. " oh you didn't go with the HEMI, alot of people dont know it but you can actually bore those out to 1500 RPM"   :smilielol:
