Right now, that's my thing...painting, hate it, would rather stick a needle in my eye, but keeping busy!

Biggest problem is a bathroom, that was at one time painted with an oil based enamel.

I tackled that tiny room a few months ago with a vengeance... I scrapped, sanded...bought the special de-glossing crap they sell, bought the best of the best primer/sealer that the stores suggested...and, for good measure, installed a new exhaust fan!

Then I painted with the correct type of paint.

Now...back to this..

What am I doing wrong?

Getting frustrated...I have a hammer, a crowbar, a sawzall...and 6 sheets of drywall....but don't wanna go that route yet...

Btw...that's just a random pic of a wall...ceiling looks way worse....

I always had better luck with a gloss since it repels water better.

You can't put latex on oil. The only way to switch over is to prime with an oil-based primer.

Okay, an oil based primer...would that mean I could paint over it with latex, or no? If not...

Can you get semi gloss oil based enamel paint? (eggshell finish)

You've got checking so you already know the answer to whether you have to scrap it again.
Not saying eggshell isn't available... because usually it's semi gloss kitchen and bath paint.   I just haven't looked lately  :shruggy:

Oil base primer, x3 coats. Eggshell is the most gloss I would recommend.

Just like a car...if any under coats have any issue painting over it is not going to hold up. You "could have" cleaned the walls by scrubbing with TSP and green scrubbies then used a shellac based prime like "KILLS" for like 2 light coats. Then painted over with darn near any type paint.
Now if you don't undo any checking or peeling coats first your just screwing yourself later. By the way, bathrooms usually get green board sheet rock as it's more stable in damp locations.  :scratchchin:

Ok, Your painting inside. Down south house paint is considered exterior.
