There is a 71 318 base for sale with good body and paint, bench seats and needing front window and gas tank.

Then I found a 74 SE w/440 (non matching and needs rebuilding), buddy seats and needing paint.

Not sure which way to jump, 74 has 66' 440.

both cars have solid floor pans and 71 needs new interior.

It's easier to swap an engine or replace seat covers than repaint a car (for most of us) - especially on the 71. Not to mention, buying a driver means you can enjoy it right now. Upgrade it as you go. Don't really know much about the 3rd gen cars. The SE with a 440 might be rarer but not sure if it's really worth that much more money in the long run.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

randy73

it is a non-matching 440, 74 came w/400.

randy73

cost is about the same, $2700 for 74 and $3200 for 71.

i lean to the 71. but thats just a preference choice. first year for the 3rd gen.

71 - Just the preferred year to me and already painted.  This is with the assumption the 71 was done right, body conditions being the same as far as rust/repairs made.  Get a 440 later.   I want to repaint mine, bought it with a decent paint job, in 2009.  At least I can drive it, until I get around to stripping it down and have the money.

Not to change the subject, but are you local to Macon, GA?  I ask because I live right on the AL/GA line and there aren't alot of members local to this area that I know of.  (don't worry, I'm not in the market for another so I won't be trying to buy it out from under you  :2thumbs: )

Don't know much about 3rd 'gens; aren't they all the same?  If that's the case, then go with the car with the better body and paint.  F**k body work and paint!

IMO...  I am partial to the 71 over the 74.  I like the quarter window design of the 71 over the 74.  I think the 73 & 74 have too big of an area for the quarter windows.  I also like the straight body lines of the 71 over the 73/74 curved lines on the doors.

If the 71 is in better shape and you don't have to do any body work or painting right away, that is a MAJOR PLUS!

The masses have spoken.  72Charger-SE articulated much better what I think the rest of us noticed but never noticed before.  (make sense?)

A '71 would get you a better return if you ever had to part ways with it.

'71.
But I'd question how good the body & paint is if the seller is only asking $3200.  :yesnod:  :Twocents:
