My "shop" for the work off the car. Second pic is the running board support that I had to make in order to clear my pipes. Both sides are identical. I used some square tubing to join the pieces of the original support after cutting and bending them to the shape I needed. The car is low enough that I don't need them to step on, but I am keeping them on because the side pipes run under them.

These next pictures show the alt mount that I fabbed up. I used a couple spacers to mount it to the top bolts of the timing cover, using the one bolt on the driver side head, and a support bolted to the motor mount to keep everything solid. I will figure out the alignment of the alt with washers, then I will trim down some spacers for the alt and adjustment arm.

A couple more pics.

I was amazed at just how 'small' a 440 looks in my 37 Chevy.
" I have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours researching what works and what doesn't and I'm willing to share"

Windsor

Yeah, they really kinda do look small in the older cars. Only thing left til mine can run is the oil pump cover. Everything else is completed.

Windsor

Went to the machine shop today to pick up my oil pump cover. He decided that instead of modifying the cast iron cover, he used a billet aluminum block that was extra from another build and made one. Unfortunately, he didn't account for the size of the pressure relief piston and made the hole 3/4" all the way across. Though it actually isn't all that bad, it needed to have a sleeve put in anyways since the piston is steel. Going back up on Monday to show him what needs to be done as he is building it.
Had hopes of getting it running this weekend, but atleast I know now that it is getting close.

Windsor

Got everything put on the engine and started priming it. The oil pressure is roughly 75psi. I will first try thinner oil, if that doesn't get it reasonable, I will get a new spring for the pressure relief. Also, I am gettin oil to the pass head but not the driver side. I will get some help to run the drill as I turn it over by hand to see if it just isn't to the oiling hole in the cam yet. I will get some pictures either tonight or tomorrow of the oil pump cover and current setup.

Windsor

The new oil pump cover. Yes, I have since secured the oil hose away from the header and will be putting a heat shield over it.

Windsor

Another angle. Don't mind the liquid Teflon tape, the excess got cleaned off after it was pulled off and the pump installed. I had to yank the motor out to clearance the frame. I used 1/8" steel to box the section I had to trim. Somehow during all the work and my move to OR from AZ, I managed to lose 1 one my ARP oil pump bolts, which is why you see the one grade 8 bolt on it. But hey, I am not building it to be a show car, so an ugly bolt that you have to crawl under the car to see wont bother me.

Windsor

When I pulled everything apart and yanked the motor to clearance the frame, I noticed that my headers hadn't completely seated. So, I put a straight edge on the flange to check and HOLY SH*T they were warped. Glad I found that before I started it up. I sectioned the flange and they seated nicely when I put them back on.

Other side.

Also installed my new floor mount throttle pedal. Man, what a world of difference that made over the spoon pedal I had in it. I fired it up with the spoon pedal and the damn thing was binding every which way, this was even after I reinforced the base to keep it from twisting. The new one sits on two pivot points and is solid, not to mention a hell of a lot more comfortable. The lever goes through the floor and has a base plate on the outside which the cable housing/flange attaches to. Very pleased with that $68.

One step forward, two steps back. Got my new firewall mount master cylinder with 7" booster and firewall mounted pedal in. Hot the lines made up, but when I crawled underneath, I found that my rear main seal was blown. I looked at a little bit of oil on the bell housing and saw oil dripping from the back of the crank down the tc.
I guess that's just how it goes. Tomorrow I will get the brakes bled and , if my rebuild kit comes in, I will rebuild my carb.

JB400

Murphy can be a pain sometimes.  You'll get it going your way eventually :2thumbs:

Windsor

Rebuilt the carb, worked wonders. Got the new booster and master installed. Now, she runs and she drives. Stopping is still a little bit iffy, front brakes (original) are spongy. But, the backs (8.75") work great.

Charger-Bodie

Maybe the rear main will soften up with use? If its not leaking too much it may not be a huge deal, they are are pretty weak point. I'd get a billet insert if you do try to seal it up. Makes for a lot better odds.
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

Windsor

Yeah. I am going to run it for a while. I won't get to drive it a lot since I am unable to work, and hopefully I will have back surgery soon since I go to see the VA surgeon next Friday. I am going to wait on ripping it apart until I have enough money to completely rebuild it with higher performance internals. Til then, I'll just get the front brake figured out, get the body back together, and check the oil every day. Lol.

I'm really enjoying this thread.  :2thumbs:

In the early 80's I had a '40 Plymouth Road King with a 383 stuffed in it.  :coolgleamA:

It was a total deathtrap, but it was loads of fun.  :drive:

Back then, everybody said it was a real piece of shit.  :eek2:

Now, it would be called a "Rat Rod" and be in some magazine.  ::)

Windsor

Pictures of new brake setup. Firewall mounted pedal w/ 7" booster and corvette style master. For the life of me, I cant get the front brakes to stop being spongy. Back brakes lock hard enough that it will give the car a 6" lift but wont power brake. Guess I need to run some pressure gauges on the trans to see how its doing since it is a brand new stage 2 rebuild.
Anyways, onto the pictures.

Windsor

Some more.

Windsor

All together now.
Side note: yes, the wiring looks like a mess in the previous pictures.. I had to track down a couple wires in the looms so I pulled it down from where I had it mounted up behind the dash.

Yeah. My '40 already won one trophy. Runner up for Bucket Of Bolts. That was back when I drove it to the show with the original motor. Half the people there couldn't figure out how a 70+ year old car drove to the show and got that when there were cars there that were falling apart. Literally, one had 100mph tape holding the back glass in, and another one had the door fall off at the show.
Hot Rod, Rat Rod, whatever people want to call it, I like it. Even the chipping paint has grown on me a bit. Only thing I really want to do is rebuild the motor since I decided to just get it running instead of a full rebuild. Having the rear main leaking is annoying. I can deal with the spongy front brakes, the broken door windows, even the rich exhaust fumes. But that dang rear main seal leak is pissing me off.. Lol.

:drive: Went out for a drive today. Woah buddy under steer. Definitely need to get use to it. I'm thinking maybe a suicide knob to turn the wheel faster when turning. Aside from a few quirks, she drives nice.

Sounds like your ready for some fun!  :2thumbs:
