I have a 73 Dodge charger with the column shift automatic and standard gauges.I would like to convert it to the ralley gauges, can this be done simply by plug-and-play or does it require an all new harness and dash ?

The easier is get the whole underdash harness, because while standard cluster gets the power and signals from senders via multipin conector, Rallye cluster gets individual plugs and sockets everywhere.

in your case, having a 73, I advice to get a 72/73 harness, since 71 and 74 ( specially 74s ) are diff monsters. 72s and 73s also got really small diffs, but easy to match ( like some of the A/C or heater control plugs ), They should match with harnesses to engine bay, but need to be checked though

quite often you can get cheap underdash harness because they got some damages or cut pigtails or plugs. Doesn't really matter since with the cluster wires exception, the rest of harness remains the same between standard and Rallye, so you can get parts from your standard setup to fix anything on the replacement harness.

You can modify your standard harness, but is a job what requires some patiente and lot of material ( sockets, terminals and plugs )

Sometimes a whole used harness can be cheaper than modify your one. I have found used harnesses in $50-100 rate.

Thank you very much.  That kinda sucks. I was hoping it was as simple as just changing out the gauge pack.  Oh well guess that will have to wait till another time. I just love the ralley gauges so much more and there a lot cooler.

You can probably pick up an entire dash fram with the harness fo rthe price of that harness. I have even seen them (Craigs List) with the gauges.  Working?, eh, that is another question.  But either way it won't be with out some investment.

When I converted my 72 from the granny gauges to Ralley I cut the wires right behind the pin that plugs into the back of the cluster and wired everything in. Took me a day to wring everything out, no big deal. You will also need a different sending unit for the oil pressure sending unit.
Make sure you have a FSM, big help on something like this.
