Old Front Bumper Help?

My '68 front bumper is rough- it was roughly pitted and I hit it with Coke and aluminum foil, which smoothed it out. Then I cleaned it and used the hand glaze rubbing compound and finally Turtle Wax chrome polish. That's where I got to and here is what it looks like? My worry is I need a new bumper- anyone have any ideas how to make it pop?

Thanks,
Jim

I think you need to get it replated.

Looks like you're on a budget....these guys aren't cheap.....but the bumpers came back perfect.

Yep, either have it rechromed or if you're on a budget replace it with a repro.
The chrome is deteriorated on yours. There's no bringing it back.  :'(

Danged- tapped out for now on the resto but will start saving my pennies! Thanks for the feedback.

I often wonder how good they looked brand new. I had a NOS front bumper in the box from 68 and the plating was far from flawless.

If you have to have Chrome, then it is time for it to be redone.

My self, I went the color keyed bumper. While not correct, I like it.

Looks liked u scratched it up I only say that cause I did the same thing as u and its crap.  Aluminum foil with water should of been first then meguairs medium metal polish and then finish polish.

I use foil now before anything else on old chrome.......

I'd heard about using coke before, but wasn't till i was watching Rick's restorations this week that he recommended using aluminum foil and water to polish old chrome, looks like I've got something to try out, my bumper used to be pretty good, doesn't look bad now but doesn't look near as shiny as it should be.  Rear bumper has a couple small dings in it but is otherwise straight.  I helped my dad take an old rear bumper out of the rafters of his garage and it was the original rear bumper for my car, had a solid dent on one side, told him to take the bumperettes off and throw it out, we put it on the side of the road and in less than 4 hours it was gone.

Works great my car has its original chrome trimmings.  My first experiment was using all that other crap techniques uenxe I threw away my front bumper after I fcked it up.  Minus gas cap and front bumper I have all oriignal 45 plus year old chrome.

I used aluminum foil and Coke- then polish and this is the result.

Anyone out there in northern IL, IN or southern Wisconsin have a decent front bumper for sale?
Thanks,
Jim

Check your local auto supply and see if they have "chrome paint" which is just a silver paint but it might keep you going till you can get another bumper. :shruggy:

Thanks for the tip- there's a car swap by me tomorrow so I'll take cash and hunt down a bumper there first. (update- no luck at the swap)

Cheers,
Jim
