How do you separate the temp control buttons from the vacuum switch?

I got my temperature controls out of the car. I wanted to repaint the buttons and get the decal kit (unless someone knows a place that refaces them).  I can't see how you separate the buttons from the vacuum switch.  I sure don't want to break it.  I did see 2 plastic connectors holding the plastic plate to the back of the switch are broke but the others are in tact too.

Thanks for the help.
Over?! its not over until we say it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!...Hell no! and its not over now!..(Germans? Pearl Harbor?...shut up, he's on a roll)

I figured it out.  I had to take the screws out of the vacuum switch  and pull it back, secure it with my fingers and slowly pull the buttons straight back so they popped off the switch.  After that, disassembly was easy.

The actuators inside the switch seemed stiff and you really can't open it up. Anyone ever lubricate or have a way of making these buttons move smoothly and freely? Right now I have to pull the in switch out before I can push in the next one.

Any help is appreciated.
