I don't think the old is full stock engine, but still racing against a new Hemi
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

I doubt the classic Challenger is stock...

Troy

Didn't watch it yet but, from reading the comments, it seems odd. The T/A was never designed to drag race and it has those tiny little rubber band tires on it. The SRT-8 is the top of the line performance (like the 426 Hemi would have been). I would rather see the SRT-8 take on a T/A on a road course and a 440-6 or Hemi on the drag strip. Heck, a 340 Dart on a drag strip!

Now that I watched it - there's no way the 70 is stock! Don't know if the new one is either. Is there a reason the SRT-8 can't launch? Even with the "better" driver it's horrible off the line!

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

My other thought is that as much as I like the SRT, I'd still rather have the TA.

First off, I have to say that I too feel that the T/A has had some work done to it.  But, even more important is HOW you launch the new Challenger SRT8.  It doesn't have the "direct" linkage that the '70 has and therefore has a bit of lag built in.  (Electrics/computer, etc.)  As a result you need to launch differently...read that as a bit early.  If you time your launch on one of the last yellow lights, it works much better.  It takes a bit of practice so that you avoid red lighting, but it's the best way to maximize your times.   And yes the traction Control should be off, but you need to turn it off correctly...just hitting the button only partially shuts it off.  Moral...you need to know your car.  AND, there is more to drag racing than just flooring the gas pedal.   It also appeared as if the SRT driver was not pushing the car later in the run, as the SRT has the power to move itself down the top end.  I would bet that the SRT driver doesn't have that much drag racing experience.  Plus, if you are going to get serious, you need to tune the car with your hand held tuner (Diablo, etc) to get the most out of it.   The computer is trying to save the car and you are turning to push it.....it becomes an electric tug of war.

Just my two cents....I am no Ronnie Sox which is why I have an automatic, but even an automatic will give you a strong run....just remember what Dick Landy and others did with them......

DAY CLONA

QuoteI would bet that the SRT driver doesn't have that much drag racing experience

You did see the notation that the owners switched cars in races 5 and 6?, and with doing so the 70 T/A (with the SRT8 driver/owner) after getting familiar with the the 70 in race 5, was still kicking the new Chubbenger to the curb in both races

... having owned my 71 Challenger T/A 340/6 pak 4 spd (clone) for over 30+ years, and having gone thru various smblk 6 pak builds and lots of racing, the current motor, 410 CI stroker which I built back in 1994 is like a wolf in sheep's clothing going up against vintage Bblk iron and modern muscle, the smblk 6 pack is a formidable player even with minimal mods

Never knew about the 71 clone Mike.  To be accurate though, wouldn't it have to use the predicted four barrel?

ACUDANUT

You can't clone something they never made.  :Twocents:

Ghoste

Then call it whatever you want, clone works for me but you are technically right I suppose.  It is a recreation of a car they proposed to make and went as far as creating an ad for it.
If the 71 TA can't be a clone, what are the 71 wing cars?
What would you call the 71?

ACUDANUT

 A 70 "tribute" Heck I don't know. :shruggy:

Ghoste

But Chrysler said they were going to make one.  They even advertised it nationally (photo was the 70 with an airbrushed grille but...?).  It has nothing to do with the 70 really, it represents a 71 model that Chrysler pulled at the last moment.

ACUDANUT

The same can be said then for A 71 Challenger Convertible R/T. They dropped the R/T in the Convertibles that year.  :Twocents:

SRT-440

That 340 isn't stock if it's running that fast. Also, the SRT is a 6.1 Hemi (those wheels don't come on 392's).
I would suspect a 392 would give the 340 a run for its money.  :2thumbs:

Err, yes okay?  :-\  But its hardly relevant to defining Mike's 71 TA car.

c00nhunterjoe

The old one is nowhere near stock. Nice car though. And the srt8 driver is horrible. My 07 rt has more mph then he does along with consistant 13.5 runs on radials.
