Why Are 70's Considered Lesser Than 68/69's ?

I always see value guides and for sale ads where 70 Chargers are a lot less than 68/69's ? Why is this ? I know some people aren't too keen on the grille on the 70 but it's the same bodystyle after all

cavemanno1

Well as you said already with that grill they kinda ruind it!For me that is the case!Don't like the car just because of it but to each his own!Shame they didn't just stick with the '69 design for a few more years like these days!Mind i was never really fond of the '68s but they grow on me now and would love to have one!

Nowdays i can't tell a 8 year old Audi,WV,Toyota or any other make from a new one!

70s are fish lips, but they are still cool looking, but to me a 68 is a classic look and 69s are confused and 70s are just angry fish lips.

Though Ill take 3 any day...

Easy. 68-69 are famous. "Bullitt" / "DOH".
F&F is attempting to bring the 70 up to speed, as is MAD and Daytona clones needing front clip sheet metal.

well the only main difference is the front bumper so it will have to be the only reason.
the front of the 70 is slightly longer when viewed from the side as the hood and bumper does not  taper as much as the 68 and 69.
Overall length is the same. The side on view of a 70 with the longer front is slightly out of proportion and does not look as good as 68 and 69 shorter looking front.
The front bumper is also bulky looking and heavy. This is my opinion and do  not expect anyone to agree. I own a 70 but must admit a 68 is my first choice.
But I like chargers that much they are hard to find so I will take whatever I can get. After all it is still a second gen.

Ive also read  the front of a 70 being referred to as a

                "HARMONICA"

70's are a transitional year. After booming sales the market was changing, you'd had to been there to understand. They knew what the 3rd gen was looking like and if you have ever compared the 69-70-71 side by side you can see the front end evolving.

'70's are often downplayed by '68/'69 owners due to an inferiority complex.

It's probably the fault of making the Six Pack available not to mention hydraulic lifters for the Hemi and those awful looking Pistol Grip shifters.
That or door scoops, I don't know.  :shruggy:

I think the 70 got the large chrome bumper because of the 69 Daytona design. They used the same hood and fenders from the daytona and installed the big ass bumper.

Thanks for this information.  I had assumed it was because the 68 is the classic 2nd gen and one goes on from there.  I really like the 70 though, but because that is what I grew up with.
Who in their right mind would say

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

I feel the opposite. At one time I preferred a 69' as a kid mainly due to D.O.H. However, now that I am older I have owned more 70's than 69's & even more 68's but now prefer the 70's due to the factory colors, options & accessories. I currently have (2) 70's coincidently. (3) 70's including my Challenger.

And there I was trying to post a compliment to the 70 models at the very moment you put that inflammatory and disrespectful comment into the thread.  I'm hurt man, I'm really hurt.  :rotz: :shruggy: :'(

I actually prefer the 1970 model Chargers (over the other years) because of the large open grill area, especially if the Charger in question happens to be triple black....

70 sublime

Not sure why the price would be any different on all 3 years

I have had all three and now have a 70

Always wanted to paint the 68 69 a 70 colour but could not bring myself to do it
Have seen others painted and they just did not look right

Besides the 70 is the first year for the locking steering column which is also a plus
next project 70 Charger FJ5 green

You know what though, I like the old throwback key in the dash bit personally.  When I had E-bodies the column switch was one of the few things about them I never cared for much.

I think the 70 got the large chrome bumper because of the 69 Daytona design. They used the same hood and fenders from the daytona and installed the big ass bumper.

It is the other way around.   The 70 Charger design was locked down long before the Daytona came to be.       The loop bumper was a styling cue used beyond the Charger model; for example the 70 Coronet and the 71 Road Runner.

Personally, I don't see any difference in collectibility of a 68, 69 or 70.    They all have their own strong points.    I think the 70 is the most refined of the three.

jaak

I'm a '69' guy. With that being said, when comparing 318/383 cars it does seem that 68/69 are a little more popular and maybe bring a little more money. When you get to the 'thoroughbred' cars, An optioned out 70 in the right color will do seem more desirable. 70 added the 440 6pak, pistol grip 4 speeds, more comfortable high back seats, hi impact paint colors, and so on.

I have told the story on here before, but I'm still kicking myself in the a$$ for passing on an '70 RT/SE with fresh Hemi Orange paint, numbers matching rebuilt 440 & 727. All the car needed was new interior and wheels. That was back around 1996-97, and I didn't know then what I know now. I passed up on it because I was wanting a 69. I could have bought it for $3500  :brickwall:  :brickwall:  :brickwall: Live and learn.

I never really cared for the front bumper myself.  Over time, it does not bother me as much as it used too, but still. . . . .

I do like the 70 interior more than the 68s and 69s, plus the pistol grip shifters are just way cool.

I think the 70 is the best combo of front/rear/interior.  However, I would love to have one of each from 66-71 and all second-gen hair splitting is just that.... hair splitting.

It absolutely is hair splitting.    Considering I no longer own a Charger, I'd take ANY of them.

Years ago I didn't much like the loop bumper either but today I actually find it striking.
