Does anyone here know how to decode the numbers stamped on the side of a 727 Automatic Transmission ?
As to what it originally came from etc. ?

PK2892099L  2664

update
Wiped stuff off better, put better glasses on, found the full VIN stamped on the 727 pass side on the bell housing "XS29L9B******", so it is the original Trans to the Charger  :2thumbs:
Still a little confused on the 2892099, because the last digit still looks like a "9 to me ? but it could be a "3" as it is very lightly stamped ?, and the 2664 on the 10,000 day calendar jives on Nov 12 1968, as just 10 days before the car was produced on Nov 22 1968. :icon_smile_big:

The partial VIN on it if it has one will tell you more.

So can anybody help me out ?

I found the 727 Trans decode number sheet... THANKS to John Kunkel on here :2thumbs:, but my Trans number isn't listed ?

Mine is 2892099..... instead of what it is supposed to be which is 2892093. NOT a typo... the last digit is a 9 ??
Any ideas here ?

I did not think the transmissions were stamped with the VIN  :shruggy:

No, that's not the VIN... that is the Trans application/part number stamped on the side of the trans just above the pan, drs side.

Transmission VIN stamps started during the 1968 model year.

Mine does not have the VIN stamped... just the PK2892099 number ??... which according to this list should be 2892093 for a '69 440 375hp Engine, and "PK" being the Kokomo Plant.

Just behind that is a 4 digit # "2664", which I was able to figure out is a 10,000 day calendar date I think ? or Tuesday, November 12th 1968 ?
That jives...
The Car was born Nov 22 1968 according to the Fender Tag. Just dunno about the "9" last digit instead of the "3" ?

A car with an SPD of 11/68 should have a VIN on the transmission and probably the whole VIN.
Are you sure there is no VIN on the pad on the passenger's side?

So a 66 car won't have a number on the transmission?

Waiting for John to chime in , he helped identify mine, look further through the list, it could be out of another body type,
John helped by that number and found the transmission I have is out of a C body , ? What's the chance something failed and a repaired unit was installed to get the owner going again, think of the delays if they waited to pull apart the numbers matching unit and then repair and reinstall , so chances of having your original unit only if it was never pulled for repair

That 2892099 number is not listed (in 1969 anyway) on any of the engineering graphics or the 69/70-71 Parts Books for any A/B/C/Y -body applications, even considering the occasional running model year change.  Since it appears to be a 1969-model transmission, it could be out of a truck (I don't have any part number info on '69 trucks) -- or it could be simply a mis-stamped part number...  :shruggy:

I agree with 69CoronetRT - the assembly date puts it in a timeframe when the entire VIN should have been stamped on the transmissions rail, so that should help with figuring out the application.

OK, so I should look for a VIN Number with a '69 Trans on the passenger side of the 727 apparently ? up by the non machined pad on the Bell Housing ?
That's what I found elsewhere on the internet... that the VIN is stamped on the passenger side, NOT the drivers side.

I'll look today, and then re-check my last digit again on the drivers side as well.

Pretty much everything 289209* is 1969 BB, and the 2664 date jives just 10 days before production, so I can't see it being anything but original ? Engines never been out of the Car, Exhaust System is factory original untouched, and it sure doesn't "look" like the trans has ever been pulled... but one never knows I guess ?

The last 9 in the part number has gotta be a mis-stamp, happened sometimes.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
