I finally did it, I took leave of absence from work and am going to school full time!

Since I will be spending quite a bit of time on campus between classes, I would like to be able to spend that time studying.  Some of my text books are ebooks and I really don't want to carry my heavy laptop around.

I'm looking at the Kindle fire hd but would like to spend a little less if possible.

I don't need it for much more than reading books and surfing the web.

Any advice?

Galaxy Note 8. Ok, well that's the one I want. I have no idea if it fits your needs... ;)

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

A little pricey maybe, but certainly one to consider.  Knowing me, I'd probably want all the stuff I now say I don't need anyway.

I just bought the wife a Nook for xmas, perfectly fine for ebooks, which is what i bought it for, since she's been reading books a lot lately.  She'll also use it for some internet use and email,  but she also uses a pc so don't expect much out of it.  It only cost 129.00 which is pretty cheap compared to the Kindle HD fire.
I use an IPAD mini myself, I like it for emails, some internet use, and some app gaming, but wouldn't consider it for doing homework or schoolwork, i need a keyboard.

I use the IPad more than I do my actual computer. My kid uses the iPad mini all of the time. You can get a Bluetooth keyboard and sync it to the iPads. Which comes in very handy when trying to type more than a few words at a time.

Good info, thanks!

I have a desktop at home which my wife uses mostly, I have my own laptop that is setup to do all school work.  It's just too big and heavy to drag around though.  Besides the battery life is ridiculous.  I won't need anything more than an onscreen keyboard, but I do need something that easily does readers, net, email and such.  I will be spending a lot of time on a couch in the commons between classes and it would be great to check emails, assignments and read my text books.

My wife has a Kindle, it's been perfect for one year. She's very happy.

I also gave the daughter one of the netbooks I had bought for myself when she went to college as a backup in case her desktop failed.  Still works just as good today as it did when i bought it.  Her desktop power supply failed and it got her by till we fixed the pc, then i got her a laptop which she conveniently dropped and broke the hinge to the screen...kids are so hard on tech equipment, but the netbook survives still.  I like it because it has a 10 hour battery life and a built in keyboard.

I dont think its possible to beat the low end kindles price point.    http://www.amazon.com/kindle-fire-hd-best-family-kids-tablet/dp/B00CU0NSCU

Once you get up to the Higher end kindle models..... then you should consider the Nexus 7.        http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BHJRYYS/ref=fs_ta  VS   http://www.amazon.com/Google-Nexus-Tablet-7-Inch-Black/dp/B00DVFLJKQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1389690316&sr=8-2&keywords=nexus+7

I own a nexus 7 and an Ipad2 Full size.   I like and dislike them both in different ways.  However they are both very capable.

Good luck!

I'm torn on the size.  7" would be real handy to carry around but I wonder if i's big enough?  I'll stroll to Best Buy over the weekend and try some out.  The kindle Fire HD is on the top of my list right now.  Hard to beat for $140, although I'll need a $40 case as well.

The full size Ipad is really to heavy and big to comfortably read in bed with.  It is my biggest complaint.

And sometimes I wish the Nexus was bigger.  :icon_smile_tongue:

$40 for a case?

Let me introduce you to you new friend Amazon.   :)

Do you guys preffer kindle to the actual book?

I have hundreds of books but would never have a kindle! There is something about the books, their smell, touch and their physical presence just irreplaceable with a flat screen IMO.

Ha, not bad!  The case I saw was for the kindle.  It's hard plastic with magnetic closure and folding stands.  I guess I could've looked for a better deal but since I don't know which tablet to get yet, I guess it can wait.   :icon_smile_big:

I took my laptop into class on Tuesday and will do so again today.  It's doable but it's a hassle.  The laptop is pretty heavy, it's big (near 16" screen) and I need an outlet if I want to use it for more than 2 hours.  It'll do for now but I'll be looking over all these tablets on the weekend.

Ghoste, I have a ton of books and I still prefer them over an ebook, but when we are talking college text books, gimme the ebook!  My anatomy book is big enough to kill a man on impact so I'd rather flip the pages on my screen.  Besides, some text books have hyperlinks in them which makes for a better studying experience.

I still buy plain non fiction books though.

I had a sony vaio laptop when my daughter received a iPad for Xmas a few yrs back. I found myself using it more and more when she wasn't around and using it to the point where I went I bought my own LOL.
Now my laptop collects dust for the most part. Really doesn't get used much anymore!
I have found the tablet meets my needs quite well
Good luck with your search, I know you'll wonder how you managed without one once you make the purchase.
