So, I may be in trouble...

I had to take a trip to the grocery store today and there was a dog in the parking lot....a Golden Retriever, very friendly, but loose.

While I was petting him, thinking of what to do next...can't just ignore it, it's cold out, and very close to the main drag, the loser owner comes walking up with a leash in hand saying the dog ran away from home and he's been looking for it.

Anyway, I figured the guy would be happy the dog was okay, but when he went to put the leash on him, he starts to punch the dog...not cool, a closed fist punch to the poor dogs head.

So, I stopped him, just grabbed him and got him away from the dog. People saw what was happening, a couple gathered around, which was good I guess, because that's when the guy started getting mouthy(a few words were exchanged) and hit me.

So, I hit back, but just a little harder than he hit me....hard enough to knock him on his ass, and stay there...

That's when the police showed up...there was a cop at Tim Hortons in the same parking lot, go figure...

They were told what happened, called the humane society to pick up the dog, took my information and told me to go home, they would be in touch.

Now I'm worried I'm going to get charged with assault, anyone know how this works..the charges or whatnot?

At least the dog is no longer with the dude, probably why the dog ran away in the first place.

Nothing wrong there buddy..

I hope the witness(es) mentioned to the police what they saw.........  The dog appears to be better off...... I salute you....  :patriot:

Think there's some good signs....you were not arrested right there....there's witnesses.....humane society was called......

Again.....hope it works out for doing the right thing.

I can tell you that I would of done the exact same thing that you did . . . maybe worse.   Then I would say "how does it feel hitting something that can hit back!"
Tomorrow is promised to NOBODY . . . .

I'm saluting you too to have a corage to step in and stop that asshole! Most people would just go away or ,like the epidemic nowdays, film it on their selfphone :flame:

No charges... :icon_smile_big:

Very stern warning....I could have lost my job, if charged...whew! (I'm a social worker)

I broke the guys nose... :coolgleamA:

He can sue me they say... ::)

The dog is fine, being taken care of, he had a nosebleed...was scared, will be kept for a few days, then fostered out....till they find a new home for him  :2thumbs:.

cavemanno1

Sue you?He started the whole punch up game and he could sue you?You know when someone can do that the legal system is wrong! What were you supposed to do,stand there and show the other cheek?

Ram07

The powers that be said, it was because I put my hands on him first...I pushed him! Then he got stupid and hit me, and so on...

I'm not concerned about him suing me...I think the whole thing will just go away now!

I must say though, a big thank you to those who agreed with me...much appreciated!

nvrbdn

i am assuming that in the defense of the animal, the push was merely to seperate him from the animal that he abused. after being seperated, he came back as the aggressor.  thats the way i seem to remember it happening. :shruggy:

You are one smart man caveman...thanks for the defense thought, just in case...

The dog was huge...teeth like a Grizzly, I'm sure I helped him...:icon_smile_big:

If he tries that I would definitely push that you were acting in defense of the dog and even if it did I think the testimony of the witnesses would negate anything he said. He instigated it by hitting the animal, and I'd bet that would make him the aggressor.

You rock!!!

Fuck that guy.

Ram07

An update to the dog incident...

The guy agreed to go no further than for me to pay his cost of the dog being taken from him...It's usually $200 when a dog is put in the humane society, so I agreed. (it was in writing, the two cops actually did follow up on things!) However, he was not charged with anything either...maybe they threatened him, I don't know, But it was Sargent Buddy from High school, that came to my door the second time... :scratchchin:

Went there to pay up, pooch is in a new home, was charged $50, well, not really charged...they just asked for a donation for all the upkeep and care for all the animals. Fine by me...chapter closed.. :icon_smile_big:

Annnd the guy has a sore nose, and his eye was back...sooo, yeah....worth it... :D

Thanks for the support!

Didnt he hit your first?

Not sure why you have to pay because your a better fighter..

Regardless thats $250 to be proud of.

Lisa, that button part "PLEASE HAVE YOUR PETS SPAYED OR NEUTERED!" I am very offended by  :icon_smile_angry:. Lord put us on earth to keep it going, the guy down stairs doesn't want no one on earth. By you saying what you just did, supports the guy down stairs. I'm all for the guy (Lord) upstairs  that wants things on earth to keep it going :2thumbs:. The micro-chipped part I don't mind at all, I support that idea alot  :2thumbs:

MoparManJim

Ram07, I am very proud of how you handled the issue and help the dog out  :2thumbs: :2thumbs:.

The way I look at it is and was always told was this, if he hit you first, then that's assault on his part, not yours. Then he would get charge. You was only defending yourself with your strike back at him. Now if you would have hit him first then that would be assault on your part and not his.

Again, good job man. Job well handled!  :2thumbs:

Ram07

Thanks again, the way he was saying it to the police was I pushed him first, so he hit me....no matter now, it's over.

And I may have explained things wrong....The usual charge is $200, they waived that charge (the humane society) because the dog was taken right away...and asked for a "donation"
of $50....

So, it only cost me 50 bucks... :yesnod:

Whenever someone comes to the door our Golden goes beserk barking & carrying on so the person at the door is all worried until I open the door & they see it's a Golden.

Good job taking care of that puppy dog.  I think I might have told the humane society that guy's name in case he shows up wanting to adopt out another victim to abuse.

musta felt good (at our age) putting this guy on his ass.

part about the cops sucks but it makes you feel young again.

Ram07

Yeah, little ego boost for sure, but that being said...not to difficult to drop a younger dude that's probably 50 lbs lighter, much shorter, and his hobbies involve video games,(no doubt in his mothers basement) and hitting dogs..., and he was alone....sooo

haha, may be old, but still 6'3, 240 (man boobs may, or may not be happening...had height and weight on my side)

Still, the fact remains...I broke he nose....Who da man, me...that's right... :icon_smile_big:

combat is about surviving.

Having the odds in your favor physically is the only time you want the fight. otherwise run and live to fight another day.

I find the size is a important intimidation factor. thankfully no one has called me on it.

Ram07

yes, happy to report, I have never been in a fight, ever, seems silly to me....never got that pissed off at anyone that much before..maybe cuz I'm bigger...they decide not to...who knows...I'm far from a big guy.

But, in this case. i tossed a punch....and hit landed, and it went no further...

If it was two idiots, beating a guy, I would have ignored it...because you just never know what happened, know what i mean?

I'll stick up for furry friends, that's about it...well, unless there is a female involved...

I too feel an outrage when I see something like this.  And also think I would step in to help the animal in distress.

However food for thought is what would we do when we see someone hitting a child? Do we tend to step back a bit and are less likely to step up?

I was in a check out line the other day and in front of me was a woman with a small child in the cart.  I saw a cell phone fall from the basket to the floor and the child caught hell from the woman. I could see that the child had nothing to do with the cell phone but she took a good smack from the woman and a lecture that she could not understand. (too young).

That little girl was happy and bright until the smack and it was clear to me that she had know idea why she was hit.  The rest of the child crying episode was the woman explaining to me and the checker that the child was a problem.

So my bringing this up is to say I think I could have decked the woman if it was her dog that she hit but felt a resistance because it was a child.

I don't like this.  Why did I resist-- It is rhetorical of course--

We Americans' have our priorities mixed up.
Michael Vick caught hell for what he did, which he should have.  Almost ruined his career but Americans' like a good rags to riches story.

Former Chiefs Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson has a habit of beating up women.  Did he ever get suspended or serve any jail time?
About the worst punishment he got was being released before he was able to break the Chiefs all time rushing record held by former great Priest Holmes.  Boy that pissed him off.   :icon_smile_big:

We sent our Golden deep undercover looking for Vick.   ;)

I realize you meant well, but setting him free wasn't the best decision. You should have taken him to a proper animal shelter to be adopted into a good forever home. Who knows what kind of dangers or abuse the dog could have got himself into being "free".  :shruggy:

But, if was a kid, being tossed around, or hit, as in out of control type thing ...no matter what the kid did, I would definitely step in...
