steering shaft lenght

Does anyone know the length it should be? I took my steering column apart and the white plastic pins broke off, so now I have to make a small tack weld to hold it in place.
I need to know what the total length should be.
Thanks

The shaft is made to collapse in the event of an accident. If the shaft does not collapse the the steering wheel would be shoved into your face if you had a front end collision. I would leave it like it is. Years ago a friend of mine was converting a power steering to manual steering and could not find the longer shaft. He just broke out the plastic pins and extended it so it would be long enough. He drove the car for years before he sold it and never had any problems.

The problem is:
1. you can not leave it the way it is, it will collapse with out some kind of stop.
2. The shaft has been pushed all the way in and will not fit as is, so I need to pull it back put to the right length.

I've heard of guys using small nylon screws to hold it in place. Strong enough to hold it but will still break and allow the column to collapse if in an accident.

I always thought the shaft had holes drilled where the factory poured in the plastic???

I had the same problem , went hobby shop, and got similar diameter rod , line the holes up and insert plastic rod, soldering iron to both sides , abracadabra walla, fixed ,
Yes there are holes that line up the two shafts to correct length, don't bother trying to melt plastic in there , needs to be injected, ? Hard to do

From the end of the threads to the slip joint 16 1/8 inches. From the end of the threads to the end of the coupler stretched 43 3/8 inches. From the end of the threads to the end of the coupler shoved in 42 7/8 inches. My plastic was still in place but I tacked mine also account of stories about shaft slipping. My steering column is from my 69rt auto column shift. Hope this helps.

You could tack weld it , just don't put too big a weld on it, it supposed to collapse in an accident, line up the holes to get correct length ,
