This might be an engine topic, but since it is cosmetics-related....

Does an engine look better with shiny hoses, and if so, what's the best thing to use to get that look without unwanted side effects?

I like the natural or flat look....one of my pet peeves at car shows is when hoods are open and they used "shiny stuff" all over the engine and accessories in the engine compartment....not a good look in my opinion

What would the factory look be for 68-70 models?

Never.  We pulled the motor to do it right on this car.

My preference is for original flat look where it was to begin with.  Too much shine where it shouldn't be begs the question about why is this or that not shiny? :Twocents:

bill440rt

They would have just been left natural, with that white powdery residue on them.
If you feel you must put something on them there are low-gloss rubber/vinyl protectants out there.

Good points.  Does engine heat cause shiny paint to flatten some?  I noticed that even the same paint looks different based on age.  I assume where the motor is concerned it must be heat-related.

Equal balance of flat and shiny under hood. :yesnod:  Too much of either makes it look dull or gawdy

Flat, dark colors; anything but chrome or shiny stuff.  I hate engine "dress up" pieces...

Ghoste

I'm with you Myk, that stuff is for the street rod set and their 32 Fords.

Dino

Shiny hoses are almost as bad as armor all'ed interiors.  Leave it natural.

Whatever it looks like when its clean. Thats when that stuff looks right to me. Clean tires, hoses dashes. etc. No slimy junk.

It doesn't look too bad in the photo.  To get it detailed takes some elbow grease and degreaser.

Thanks.  Just seemed like all the black parts are too flat.  But if that's the way it is supposed to be then I will definitely leave it alone.

I bet if you just go through there and start wiping things down with a rag and a good cleaner though, you'll be surprised how much newer (and shinier) some of that stuff will get.
