What percentage of 68 R/Ts were 3x black??

I know the exact figures aren't known, but I figured it was worth a shot.  According to the 70 Registry, 4.3% of the R/Ts were black.  I'll conservatively assume a higher percentage of 68s were black - say 6-8%.  Then you've got roughly 75% of 68 R/Ts w/ vinyl tops at all... dropping the number to 4-6% (and that's assuming every vinyl top of a black car was also black), and then maybe 80% of those cars had the black interior?

That puts it at 3-5%.  Does that seem reasonable?

And how many of those black ones were fitted with the hemi ? 5 maybe

don't think there is anyway of  making  a calculated guess ,  except there are prolly more green &  bronze &   blue  68s   than any other color  :scratchchin: :shruggy:

how many were hemi 4 speed with air?

No '68 Charger R/T 4-speeds were ever available with A//C. If you wanted a big block 4-spd with A/C get an XP.  ;)

I doubt the percentage of black cars was that much higher in 1968. "Earth tones" were all the rage back then so there were lots of various greens and tan/gold/bronze but very few red or black. I've only owned one factory black 68 and it had a white vinyl top and white interior. I only know of one other like that and only one with a white top and black interior so it's a very small percentage. I bet the majority had black interior and a large percentage had a black vinyl top.

Thanks for the info guys.  I've seen a few black cars w/ white interiors, and one w/ a white top.  Of course if the black cars were like the rest, about a quarter of them came w/ no vinyl top at all.

Interesting that the earth tones and greens were so popular back then.

I was definitely surprised to see that only about 4% of the 1970 R/Ts were black - I'd have figured it would be more.  If the same percentage of 68s were black, then it might only be 2-3% triple black -  a lot less than I would have thought.

According to the 68 Charger Models & Prices brochure, no Hemi car could get A/C  (manual or auto), and if you had a 440 with a manual, you couldn't get it either - meaning the only R/T that could get A/C had to have a 440 auto.  (It also says a 383 w/ the 2-bbl could not get A/C either)

Be careful how you interpret that last bit! It's still referring to 4-speed cars. Most of the 383 2bbl cars I've seen (and owned) have had A/C.

And where have you seen these black 68s with white interiors? Were they factory black? I'd love to find more!

Yeah I interpreted the last part incorrectly.  It reads N.A. w/ 426 Hemi; w/383 2-bbl. or 440 Magnum when equipped w/ 4-spd manual trans.

I took the . after 2-bbl to mean NA w/ 426 Hemi or 383 2-bbl, but it seems they're a bit liberal w/ their use of the .

As far as the black 68 w/ white interior, I saw one that went to Norway.  It's not an R/T though.  I saw it when I was looking for a car early last year.

I was able to dig up the link:  http://bringatrailer.com/2010/06/18/bat-success-story-1968-dodge-charger-to-norway/

Not sure if that's the original color combo...... EDIT:  I just read the last few comments and a guy claims to know this exact car and says that it was originally bronze, so I guess scratch that....  Car looks great though.

I have always wondered about the additional tags on my fender tag. I decoded the tag but never could figure out what the 16 means.

If it is the X1 and Y6 codes you are talking about (note the upper case) and if the codes are like in '67, then X1 = tinted glass (all windows) and Y6 = black vinyl top.

You mean the two additional shiny metal tags under the top screw holes? That, I have no idea about. I had a long metal strip attached to my Challenger. I was told they were supposed to be removed (probably just clipped off) after assembly. What you see might be the remnants of something like that.

Yes that is the 16 I was referring to. The smaller tag attached by the left screw does not have anything on it.

I have heard that those added small tags to the fender tag were production line inspector tags.  Maybe??
Also,  xs29j8Bullitt ,  I see that your 3x black Hemi car, is a buddy seat auto on the column.  Very cool..

And the u1 means that someone ordered it that way.
