it's definitely cheaper in the long run to find one yourself and import it     :yesnod:  leaves out the middle man(flipper)

its the only way i'll ever do it , see to many "mark ups " over here  everyone's trying to make a buck

The car was in NY state for many years before I bought it. Was a local car the guy would never sell it until he ran into some money/legal issues. When I sold it in 2012 it was transported by trucking company to nj for shipping.

Supply and Demand at work in the Marketplace ?

Not like it's a Toyota... there will be a few thousand more of those worldwide by tomorrow ?

Thanks for that, so he's spend quite a bit in transport to get it here, it probably owes him about $15,000 now give or take a bit, the Aussie dollar was above parody late 2012, so there would have been no loss in exchange rates.

It would be ok if they were reasonable with the amount they wanted to make when sold, but the markup seems huge, I may have to resort to doing this.

instead of "resorting " to finding your own look at as an adventure ,make sure you get the car checked out before dollar one changes hands and be patient  :yesnod:

can recommend an inspection firm or find your own  or someone on here    :2thumbs:  but get it checked

The market will dictate the price for sure, whilst there's only a few of these 68-70 Chargers for sale on the main websites in Australia at the moment, they are the same cars being re-listed month after month but which are not being sold because they are too expensive.

The one which this thread was about finished on an auction quite a while ago for around $20,000, for a car in this condition I thought the seller had done pretty good with that but it was reserve not met. Months and months later its still for sale at the same price.

I also never discount the possibility some of these cars are for sale because the significant other "wants it gone" and the guy says sure I''l advertise it then, knowing full well it will never sell with the price being double or triple what its worth.

My reluctance to importing myself in part is that I'd love to find something that had been registered at some point in time rhd.

I don't think I would convert one now that you don't have to, but if was done already done (even badly) it would be good, I'm counting on a full resto anyway but I prefer driving on the correct side for our roads.

Yeah that will be about the 4th time that's happened.

He's either doing something weird with his ebay listing or he's been really unlucky with people actually picking up the car, I suspect its the former.

I've usually found it listed else ware as well and that add continues on regardless of it showing as sold on ebay.

Just found this:

With a car of this age I realise it wouldn't be *too* hard, its just doesn't seem to be done anymore on the 30 year and older stuff.

I bought a 68 Firebird back in 1993 and it had been converted to rhd in 1969, getting it re-registered was very straight forward as the RTA (at the time) still had all the records.  With all the changes to the rego system in NSW in the last few years I'm probably deluding myself in this regard.

Are you going to All American Day in Castle Hill this Sunday ?

39k is a massive markup from $8500 regardless of import/GST/etc costs.
As you said Vector, the dollar was close to parity in 2012 and it was probably imported with a bunch of other cars to cut overall cost.
If someone gives that seller $39k or even $35k for it, good luck to him, but I've seen dozens of 2nd Gens fail to sell due to insane asking prices like that.

Vector, it looks like you've been doing your homework, lurking around the forum and scouring the Aussie classifieds.
I was in your position last year and I was certain I'd have to import, before getting lucky here in Oz. Look overseas and even try to buy off someone here on the board.
You'll get there, but it takes time, sensible decision making and a bit of luck. Some advice though, finding the right Charger is like finding a needle in a haystack, finding a RHD one is twice as difficult. As Poly said, LHD is easy to get used to and part of the experience of having a Charger.

I should be at AAD this Sunday if everything falls into place.

Kelvin, it must be that the value doubles as the container ship crosses into the southern hemisphere.

Hey bjl69rt, start a new thread, introduce yourself and post some bigger pics of your car.

I'll do my best thanks for that, atleast you won't get burnt, drenched or both, nothing but extremes at AAD.

Hi TPR,

I'll be surprised if someone has paid that, good chance they've taken all of the add as gospel if they have, good luck to them though if they have.

I have been lurking (in a good way), I like to know as much as I can about a car before I make the leap and this forum is very good.

I'm absolutely in no rush, I'll enjoy the looking and the building, its all good fun ...... well most of the time. I'm really just after a non-numbers matching car in need of full rebuild so I can do the little things I'd like to.  I agree that finding a previously registered rhd 69 that is in need of full rebuild is extremely unlikely. I'll just keep lurking until something suitable comes along..... :)

If you get your car up there I'll come round and say hi.

This is interesting, a '68 for sale in QLD with a Hemi in it for $60k. Who wants it?

I agree, looks like the  same car, I bet the owner doesn't realise that video is on youtube, definitely has all the good cars in the shed though.

Love the two storey shed, wonder what he's got to get the cars up onto the platform level.

It looks very tidy in the pics and who doesn't love a hemi ?

It makes not mention of being an original RT or hemi car so I assume it is neither, if it was an original hemi car may well have an extra digit in the price also.

Yes it was.

That is shocking, its a good way to resolve their problem though, take the car no-one will buy to another country and make up a new history for it.
