On my 74,
I am missing the orange,
yet I still have all the instrument lights and stuff

any hints as to why this configuration?
Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Is your car a stick shift, or do you otherwise not have an indicator on the column?  The orange wire on the column side of this connector powers only the gear selector indicator illumination only.

Actual power feed for the instrument panel lamps comes from the fusebox via the radio connector and then a splice just before the IP connector.

Caution: My advice is based on looking at my '72 FSM!  Your steering column connector at least has the same wires in the same order as illustrated in my manual- I am making the assumption that the wiring is very similar.

It is a console automatic, so would not need an orange to the column for a gear indicator there,
now the configuration makes sense.

Thank you.

as stated, car underdash harness was common for all kind of equipped cars, then according with equippment it got more or less equipments or wire pigtails according with buildsheet.

So Harness is prepaired for column shifter if needed, and the dial indicator light orange wire is there for that

Your red wire looks like it is cooking. That is a potential problem.  :Twocents:
