Anybody here play with slot cars?

Helped a friend set one up to amuse his visiting relatives this week so it just made me wonder.

No layout running at the moment, but lots of HO's in storage and quite a few old and modern 1/32 cars on display.

Have about sixty feet of track set up in the basement (HO Scale). Plan on doing a bigger track next year.

Got some of the 1/24th scale cars I used to run at local tracks....but I can't find them right now

What scale is the most popular modern one?

probably the 1/24th scale for local tracks that you go play on....my guess would be the HO scale for home use

I wish I could find my cars that I hand built and ran on our tracks back in the 80's....we have a local track a mile away from me here...I really want to run my cars again...I gotta look harder for them

HO slot cars is what turned me into a HO train Junkie!  I have around 30 slot cars and around 8 of them are Dodge Daytona's and 3 Super Birds.

When the train bug bite I had a 300 foot layout, beefed up power supply for each lane and feeder wires all over the layout.

Big reason I got out of slot cars was because I could not find anyone to races with. Trains on the other hand are fun by them self.

Ghost, that is how I caught the train bug. I was on E Bay looking for HO scale trees and buildings. Few of the lots had train stuff in with them that I bought. Bought a few junk Life Like train sets for $35.00 after seeing them on E Bay. By then I was hooked.

Now I have some HO Steam Engines that cost $700.00 alone?  And I use my computer to run the train layout? 

Stay away from Trains, stick with Slot Cars and Mopars!

I had this set when I was a kid.  It seemed like there was another set with 1st gens.
Dad gave it to one his buddies for his kids.  

I'm tempted to hit but-it-now button and buy back some great memories.

I have the Carrera 1/32 slot cars
There used to be a fair number of guys around that we raced with but the numbers keep going down and there is not much racing now

I find I am more just collecting the dodge stuff now

i have the new carrera sets with the larger cars, plus some ho sets, and some of the older sears sets from the 60's with the 1/24 cars and the total control sets. plus an old matchbox set that you can use your matchbox cars with. then i have the motorific cars and track that ran off batteries in the cars.  i have the large and smaller scale of those.

I've got a bunch of 1/32 Carreras mostly...  Chargers mostly.  Got a Carrera track in the basement that I really don't get much use out of.  My friend has a track in his garage we use occassionally on Tuesdays.  Plus some other Scalextric,  Pioneer Chargers too.   Plus other stuff.    Most $$$ is NSR Porsche 917 Gulf #20 Steve McQueen car.

New old stock 1962 Scalextric 1/32 scale set.   It's never been plugged in.   I believe these were marketed by Lionel in the USA.

The Ramo Stott is a neat touch Aero.
I have a scaletrix set with a couple of race livery Dodge Vipers, subarus,  a GL with Bo at the wheel, a black 69 R/T and a few pom ford escorts which actually out corner everything. The Chargers on the other hand handle like a real fat assed B body - sliding out all around the corners. I have a jump section that goes in occasionally too.

How well do those stay on the track?  I used to have HO as a kid in the 80's and that little copper pin didn't keep them on.  Watching them fly off was cool but these scaletrix aren't cheap.

I think you're supposed to slow down for the corners.

They always seemed to be barely moving or full speed and flying.   Never seemed to get to the in between speed.

the carerra sets work real well adjusting the speed. you just need alot more room to get a good size layout.

     on the ho stuff, the newer cars are loaded with magnets and can hold the curves really well, i run my old cars and the rear slides out on the curves. the newer stuff stays planted in the corners.

   we used to have a group that would get together and drag race. there was 5-6 guys together on a sat night racing for hours. of course you only needed to go straight, so handling wasnt an issue.  they used to make kits for the cars to make them alot faster. dont know if you can still get that stuff or not.

The handling kits with different strength magnets are available, also higher rpm motors. I usually set it up for a couple of weeks in the lounge after Christmas, have to move all the furniture close to the tv and the rest is track. Wife and everyone is usually over it after two weeks...haven't bothered to set it up this year
Bro in law, worked at a model shop so would quite often give me track bits for birthday and the like...

For handing I install racing tires and add whole earth magnets in the back of the chassis.

Have to check out different tires and magnets at the local hobby store if an issue.  Accidentally bought two charger slot cars for Christmas for my son and I. I searched walmart.com for rc cars and they came up.  The wording did not jump out as slot car so quite a surprise when they arrived.  Especially since no track came with it.   New track with two more cars due Monday, and just finished a table for it in the basement.

Those Landy cars are amazing!   I cant even go into a Hobbytown USA without acting like a 10 year old. Ive passed on my love of these to my kids. We have a SCX set, 1:43 I believe, and picked up a bunch of random sets and set up a huge track in the attic. Ive got bins of vintage Tyco and Aurora that I want to put on plywood some day..

All the track & cars, about 50 of them, that I have are from the early to mid 70's & mostly AFX Aurora. There are a few Tyco cars, some G-Plus cars & over 100 feet of track if I recall. I bought half of it from a friend in school for $25 who had combined several sets & just got bored with it. Just about all of it is in good to excellent condition & still works, it's just that a lot of the tires are dried out. I don't have any photos handy but I might have a couple of instant Poloroids in an album I'll have to look for & scan.

There are a number of Mopars in the collection, like two of the number 7 Daytonas, one in yellow & one in blue. There is black & white early 70's Charger with I think the number 11 on it. I haven't looked at them in ages but there are a few other Mopars. Not sure what they would all be worth but I don't have the room to set them up & would maybe one day consider selling it all if my Daughter doesn't want it.
