727 Specialist in Indiana?

I have two questions:

1) I'm taking my smoked 727 to a guy just over the border for me (Illinois) in Indiana called 727Specialist. 727Specialist.com Anyone ever have work done by him/have any reviews?

2) He mentioned the possibility of installing a stall converter on my trans to hold the power. What does a stall converter do exactly?

All automatics have a stall converter in them, the difference is the rpm they stall at.  What he is talking about is putting a higher stall one in so that when you hold the brakes and bring the rpm up, it is a higher rpm than normal and therefore more into your cars powerband enabling a faster takeoff.
That is simplifying it somewhat but gets the job done.

Do you have any idea what this is? I just pulled the trans oil pan on my 727 and found this along with a zillion metal particles (which is no surprise the trans is smoked). I know there's supposed to be a magnet in the bottom, but this piece is NOT magnetic at all.

Its called a strut and its used to apply the bands.  It definitely should NOT be laying in the bottom of the pan.

Rebuild it yourself... Its one of the easiest transmissions to rebuild! I have rebuilt more of them I care to count!
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Will do! You know, I'm actually having a really difficult time trying to find the proper height to lower my trans. Right now my car is on jack stands with the rear end, gas tank, driveshaft, and exhaust removed. The jacks holding the rear end of my car up are stretched to 17" so I can get some underbody work done. Even when I lowered the rear end to achieve more leverage and balance for when I raised the front end, the car still seemed very top heavy and unsafe.

At this point, the only safe way remove my transmission will be to install the rear and then raise the front end to the correct height. Any suggestions from those of you who did this job without a lift?

This is how it's sitting. I don't really feel comfortable raising the front end up high enough to get the trans out. Any advice besides "don't do it if you don't feel comfortable", haha, because I won't. Should I just wait to pit the rear end in when I get it mid January?

 I agree with you. I would NOT raise up the front end with the rear end out of the car.

You got to get the stands as high as they will go. Maybe even some blocking and rigging under the stands for a few more inches. Do you have a trans jack? Or, strong dude to rest the trans on his chest and then pull him out by his feet, or lower the trans on to the floor and drag it out.

You can raise one section of the car at a time and keep raising the stands. A couple inches higher at a time, doing each end as you keep raising the stands. That is a safe method as long as you only go a couple inches higher at a time. Just need lots of blocking to put under the stands.

Best take that trans to a shop. Looks to have sh*t a band at least. Looks to be some hard parts damage as well.
NOBODY adjusts bands anymore for maintenance, and this is the result.

To answer as many replies as possible... Cooter, I agree with you. I know nothing about rebuilding transmissions, and I sure don't want this one to be an experiment (especially with how bad it is). I will most likely go to 727 Specialist to get my trans rebuilt. They have great reviews and seem to do an amazing job.

The jack stands in the rear are completely maxed out. So since the sub frame rails are higher up in the car than the rails the jack stands are supporting now, those would have to be on some tall blocks to just get it where it's at right now. It got to a point where the car was at a balance point and rocking back and fourth! Scary! We immediately secured it and began lowering it again. It just doesn't seem safe to take the trans out with the setup I have. I'm going to just wait until I get the rear end back in.

Unfortunately, I don't have a transmission jack. We rigged up a low profile 4 ton jack to have a greater surface area and were just hoping to get some extra hands to balance it.

I agree. I hate to sell a good opportunity short right off the bat, but there's no way I'm shipping my transmission across the country. I don't want to ship it anywhere, period. I have every intention of loading it up in the back of my Tundra and dropping it off somewhere.

I have a guy here in Michigan that does good work at a reasonable price.  Chrysler actually came to him asking him to build motors and trans for them to be used as generators . . lol
