Anyone remember piston & rudder auto classifieds. Now is known as auto trader. Back in 1981-82 I used to get one of these every week to check out the cars for sale. About the same time I got my license. I thought back then how expensive the cars where. Anyway I cut out a lot of mopar adds from several copies back then and put them in this photo book.  Forgot all about this book until I found it about 4 years ago. Maybe someone from the NW will see there old car. Sorry about the quality of the pics.  Check out the wing car prices..    This is just part of the photo album theres more.

Sitting on ebay or maybe waiting in line at Barrett Jackson/Mecum to bring in 20x's the price in the 80's...

thanx for posting this!!! when i was younger my favorite thing to do was look at the cars for sale & dream,i just had a FLASH BACK lookin at all these.

VERY COOL!!!!!!  IN 1978 could have bought a complete running & driving superbird for 2500.00,but i had no money.

Exactly!   The Charger next to one of those Daytonas is $2795.   Puts it into perspective.   It has never been financially "easy" to get into a wing car.

$9.00(1982) = $21.74(2013)

$500 = $1200

$2500 = $6038

$5000 = $12076

$10000 = $24000

You know of course that posting those Ads is “Cruel and inhuman punishment” to those of us that sold cars back in the back for those prices or even lower.

I couldn't get anywhere near $10,000.00 for my Hemi 4-speed Superbird in the mid to late 70's................ :rotz:

(Of course I traded for it with $500.00 cash and my 68 Charger RT, so I guess I still got my money's worth out of it....lol)  :scratchchin:

Thanks for posting those adds.  They bring back the memories of when I was searching all the time for mopars for sale.

As it has been said the higher optioned rare cars were priced out of the range of many of us.  I answered an add once in 1984 about a 67 coronet hemi car. As I recall miles were  around 20K and was being sold by the original owner that worked for a dealer ship.  The price was $1500. I could not beg or borrow that much and remember the phone call from the seller. He said a guy was with him with the money but wanted to give me a call since I was first. I thanked him for the call. It was a sad day :eek2:

It was soon after that when I bought my second house for 90K. The bank loaned me the money for the house but would not loan me $1500 for the car. :shruggy:

$1500 was a lot of money back then.  Even in '94 when I coughed up $2500 for my Charger it raised many eyebrows; "how much for a what?!"  Lol...

I couldn't afford those prices back then. I paid $300 dollars for my first car. I remember I was making $3.35 hr min wage.

Some of the adds on this thread show a price not far from the msrp when they were new.   In 69 a 440 RT Charger was in the 5K+ range. Ten years later some were advertised for nearly the same price. They were very popular then as now.

Call me odd but those still seem to be high for 1982. That would be when my sad picked up a Hemi 500 for $6k. Also same year he picked up a 6bbl Bird for $4,200

The car adds are from a lot of different issues. Maybe more like 82 -86. This is the only front page I had saved that's why I used 82 for the year.

The early to mid eighties were a time when the economy was lagging and those with money to protect looked for anything that felt better than what they had. I remember the many complaints from fellow hobbyists that we were pushed out of the fun of owning these cars by those that saw them only as an investment. It was a dark time for us that wanted to enjoy the cars as opposed to store them :Twocents:

Exactly.  If we're talking about 2013 money and 1983 car prices it's remarkable.  But, if you take into account that $2500 was a a lot of money back in the 80's it puts everything into perspective...

I feel bad for the people trying to get into it now.  On one hand, there's great information, parts and support available thanks to Al Gore's internet, but at these prices I can't even afford to buy a Year One catalog, let alone an actual road-worthy Mopar...

Thanks for posting these. I too used to pour over these when they came out. Those were the "good ol' daze".

I actually did buy one of the cars advertised - the "69 Roadrunner, blt 440, 4speed, new clutch, 3.91 posi, $6,000 in receipts" car. It was orange with black stripe and interior. I paid $1700 for it when I was 19 and working construction. I parked next to my $150 69 Charger in a car port. I don't think I paid more than $1700 for a car again until I was 34.

I've done this with old for sale mags as well.  You can't really get choked up about them, just more over have an appreciation for the cars that were for sale back then, and just how many were out there in comparison to how many you'll find now.  It's pretty fun to go through one of those and be like "HEY LOOK AT ALL THESE!!!  :coolgleamA: "  As opposed to new add mags and sites with boring family cars and the odd newer Mustang or Camaro.

Just think though, in 15-20 years people will look back at adds for current G-bodies and Fox-bodies for sale like; "HEY! LOOK! a 1987 Mustang for 3500$?!?!?  HOLY MOLY!"  :Twocents:
