68 Chargers with buddy seats- rare or not?

Hudson Hornet !

My Charger I believe had a buddy seat originally. It has an A5 code instead of A6. The car came with a console but does anyone have a pic of a charger with a buddy seat?  Also, was this a rare option or not so much?
You've never heard of a Hudson hornet ? !

A friend of mine has a '69 B5 Charger RT/SE column shift with a buddy seat.

Pretty common.  I ordered mine that way in '68.  I did not want anything coming between me and my "date for the evening", if you know what I mean......

NICE!!

Troy

Of my six different 68 Chargers four had a console automatic, one has column automatic with buckets only (no console OR buddy seat), and the last has a 4-speed with buddy seat. The buddy seat and console were both options. There aren't many buddy seat cars from what I can tell and very few with neither.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Lord Warlock

While i wouldn't say they are rare, they are less common than console cars.  If and when Ghoste gets the registry back up, there was several pics of a buddy seat tan interior on that site.   If the car came with a column mount gear selector, the buddy seat was usually in the car.  But its been my experience that not as many people ordered the buddy seat/column shift option over the console.  Below is a link that shows a blue interior with a buddy seat.

http://classicrecollections.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/dsc_6651_72.jpg

Mine came with the buddy seat in it, have to be careful leaning backwards when sitting in the middle position, the wood gets old inside and will break if stressed.  I recently got a replacement through a boardmember here.  Will agree with Troy, they aren't common, but even rarer are cars with neither.  Don't think i've seen a 4spd car with one yet, but would think that was a desired option as you can have your squeeze sit right next to you while driving with the buddy seat there, and with a 4spd it wouldn't be in the way.

I would consider my 69 3x9 RT/SE pretty loaded,A/C,PW,PDB,AM/FM,six way seat, rear defrost, rocker molding, headrests(early car),N85,yet they chose the buddy seat over the console. At first, did'nt care for the buddy seat, but after driving it,grew to liking it .

My old 318 68 had column and buddy in red original interior, man it looked good as a colour although it needed a few repairs.... Thought buddy seats were more common in the base models than consoles  :shruggy:
Old Dog, Old Tricks.

Lord Warlock

It probably was more common in the base models,  The RT models tended to have more consoles than the bases did.  I never even saw another buddy seat car for 10 years after I got mine,  I thought my RT SE was extremely rare, (up until this year when all of the sudden Y3 Creme has gotten popular).  But with an AM/FM, rear speaker fader, Light group, right side mirror, and even a locking gas cap, I've got stuff on mine i've almost never seen on other cars.

I had a 68, 383-2bbl car, auto on column, buddy seat.....been so long I can't remember the year I had it...

was red, black top, black interior

Nice, now i've seen a 4spd with one.  Its a nice combo, surprised its not more common.

66-67 with 4spd & buddy seat....not what you asked for, but you get the idea

remta1

wow never seen them in manuals before , cool

JamieZ

I'm told mine was a rare combination of color/options: QQ1, 383 4 barrel (H code), ac, 4 speed, heavy duty suspension, etc.

Now that's how a 68 should look like. Look at that dash, all original, everything in place NO BS aftermarket tach/gauges, original seat covers. The way a 68 should look. Nice 68!!!  :2thumbs:

I had a '68 four speed with the buddy seat. :scratchchin:

I stripped the four speed stuff out of it and sent it down the road.

I shoved it off my trailer into some guy's horse coral.

I did keep the buddy seat. :coolgleamA:

My current piece of shit '68 has the buddy seat with the column automatic, and interior customized by Godzilla:

Dino

My old 68 had the buddy seat as well.  Column shift, 383 4bbl.

myaerocars

My '68 Charger had one - slant 6,  bench seat, auto on column. Sadly, no pictures - only kept it a short time.

Sublime/Sixpack

Not a '68, but my '70 R/T has the buddy seat, plus four speed. I quite like the clean look of no console, plus when folded down the buddy seat makes a nice arm rest.

It's a shame that when that picture was taken none of those gauges actually worked :)  And the bezel was in rough shape:

Took longer than I wanted (and cost more too) but eventually I got it all rebuilt:

not that common, check out my avatar dealy (ok 69 but similar creature).  Did not like it when I first got it, but oddity grew on my soon ther after.  Cool rare option  :Twocents:

Lord Warlock

Was the pistol grip not available? all of them seem to have a knob.  I thought i liked the console better at first, but soon came to prefer the buddy seat.  I've always wanted to install a B&M star shifter but leave the buddy seat in place if possible.  (probably not possible) plus the longer it takes to get it on the road, the more i want to just get it running and the more it looks stock the better.

JamieZ

Pistol grip started in 1970.  Prior to that Hursts were ball shifters and Inland shifters were more of a teardrop shape.

Lord Warlock

that explains that.  My cousin had a 4spd 383 68, thought his was a pistol grip but very likey had been modified, he had a turbocharger on his in 1976, took me for a friday night cruise, and watch him play with it.  Impressed me enough so that I remembered what a charger was 2 years later when i got mine.  His didn't have a console either, but don't remember a buddy seat in his car.  Could ask him, but its long gone, he drives a 67/68 barracuda 440 now.

Only wimps wear Bowties !

Lord Warlock

don't think the buddy seat quite qualifies as a bench seat, its more like two buckets and a half seat between.

Buddy seat in my 69 R/T.   Imo, not rare.  Seen plenty.  Back in the day 6-7 passenger was a selling point.

72chrgrally

My 68 R/T has a column buckets buddy seat combo originally. Everything was gone when we got it except the buddy seat brackets.

I've had two 69's with buddy seat, one a column auto and one a manual trans.

Lord Warlock

Did the charger ever come with a manual shift on the column?  Never seen one of those either, although i've seen a coronet with a 3 on the tree.

Yes it it did.  Had a 69 with a 318 and three on the tree as well in my distant past.

Dino

Three on the tree was only available for 225's and 318's was it not?

books & brochures say no, but ya never know anymore

Ghoste

Yeah I was really only thinking about 68 and 69 answering the question.

68killerbee

I know this is a really old topic, but I just got a buddy seat and I'm trying to figure out what it fits.  I found a tag with pn: 2767786 on it.  When I google "mopar 2767786" it brings up this thread, but I can't find those numbers anywhere.  Only 8 things show up with that google search and the rest aren't car related.  So does anybody know the part number of these buddy seats? Or if they're interchangable with other years/ body style?
thanks

kab69440

Buddy seats didn't change much for a lot of years. The ones installed in Cordoba/ 4th gen Chargers have a shorter and slightly different shaped armrest.

You mean "auxiliary power port" for personal electronics. :) That would be cool to have.

I doubt many people have saved those. They are nothing but sheetmetal bent into an L and welded to the floorpans. One hole for the brackets on either side, two holes for the long one in front.

For as long as I have been doing this I get approached once every few months by someone looking for parts to convert their buddy seats to consoles. I have never held on to a non-shifter column or console for any length of time because of that. So, they are not rare, but the population is dropping.

nope, I don't have them, must have sold the set a while back

Our '68 r/t 4 speed has buddy seat. Can't imagine someone sitting there while you try to drive and shift.I think buddy seats take off a bit of muscularity of these cars.Maybe the arm rest is comfy but nothing beats the look of the '68 console. If it wasn't too expensive I'd have got one but now I'm stuck with the buddy seat!

I think the opposite when equipped with a four speed . Buddy seat is more " all business " if you asked me.
