No doubt !!!!

When I drove my Daytona at Texas Motor Speedway during the MotorTrend photoshoot, I got to haul-ass around the track. The car felt more stable at 120+mph throughout the turns than it did at 60 mph...  It was like a train on a track..............

I'm sure if we had enough money, we could rent TMS for the day......  :icon_smile_big:  Texas World Speedway (TWS) is right up the road from me actually ( the former Texas 500 was run there ). But, that tracks banks are decaying........

Baker was running away from the field in that last race of 1969 'till he wrecked under caution by ramming into the back of James Hylton's Daytona.
(OUCH ! -- Cotton was MAD.....!!)
That opened the door for Bobby Isaac's first & only Daytona win...

Not the only time Baker made Cotton mad either.  But he was a fearless charger for sure.

Thanks Dave , another must see !!! I always felt Bobby Issac was way under appreciated !!! Keep in mind the race cars of the day were 5 inches off the ground and they ran 200 . These current day race car drivers in no way have any idea what it takes to drive a car from that era !!! Current race cars scrape the ground . Anybody agree ??

The dry sump pan is 5" off the track.    Frame rail behind the driver side tire had to be 6.5" off the track!!
Front spoiler also had to be 6.5" off the track.   All these are static measurements.

At the time, Talladega had a bad bump off of 4 which necessitated  heavy torsion bar and rear spring rates to prevent the RF tire from
bottoming on the inner hood structure.

Good question: Which racers today could handle a car back then for 500 miles?     :shruggy:    (bias ply tires & manual steering, too!)

I think Isaac was pretty well respected during his time.  He was a superstar to the fan base, certainly in 1970.    It doesn't help today that his tenure in GN racing was fairly short and he died young.     If you want to talk about an under-appreciated Charger driver and multi-time champion, look up Butch Hartman of Zanesville Ohio.   He was the USAC stock car champ in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1976.

Ghoste

It also didn't help that Bobby was quite shy and generally kept away from interviews and such.  Leaves precious little today.

Good point.

I was on the Great Harry Gants website and where is basically said that anyone could drive current day stock cars !! Hell they're 1/2 off the ground compared to my era cars ! He went on to say current day racing is a joke

I was at TWS the day Baker ram ed Hylton, on parade lap no less, thous were the good days of racing.
