I plan to change my oils in these since its been forever since I did it.  I want to do the switch over to amsoil.  Does anyone see any issues of me going to synthetic?  How many quarts do I need I cant remmeber this one for some odd reason.

for the tranny I want to use the amosil 75w-90 GL-4

rear end I want to use severe gear 75w-140.

IMO in the real world we live in the only folks that would ever know are the ones you told. And the amosil dealer. If this is for your peace of mind than that will do just fine.

Consider that many use other brands and old school formulas and are satisfied.  For extreme conditions and racing, etc that is a world most people don't deal in and gets into conditions that could make a difference. :Twocents:

I would swap the 2...use the 75-140 in the trans, 75-90 in the rear gear

I read at another forum someone did the 75-140 in the tranny and it shifted harder and he drained it back and put in the 75-90 and everything was better.  Something with using GL-5 in the tranny is not good for the A833 and syncrhos.

A383Wing

service manuals for my 66's say to use straight 140w in my 833 trans's....might be a reason they have lasted for over 40 years

Like I said......"I" would swap the 2 oils that you posted...you can do what you want....you asked the question in first post...I answered...if you read on other forums about the oils...why did you ask here?

I like to get others opinions on things and the reasoning.  Not doubting you wing, but Im more interested in the reasoning where most folks like to argue I like to hear input.

I would like to see the results & proof from this test..seeing as the 140w was what Chrysler recommended back in the mid 60's

wing,
googled and found someone posting about the weights and it directed me back here lol.  Seems both are recommended and it depends on your climate conditions and how it shifts in the cold.  I live in Phoenix and its considered cold right now at 40F and can get up to 115 in the summer.

I still don't see any proof or test results saying the 140w is not good for the trans

Mean either just what they recommend by chrysler at the time, but if you live in cold climate they recommend 90 for easier shifting.  So either way use grade based on climate temp is what I got. Whatever I choose I think it be better than what I have in there now...since its so old.

wing,
looks like Im confused again....your right switch them around.   :2thumbs:

I remember reading somewhere that the synthetic stuff was too slippery for the syncros  wouldn't grab or slow the gears fast enough.

possible for the older stuff. I changed my manual trans fluid in my 94 Dakota...it called for 90w, so I put that in...I could not shift it cold at all....was rally straining to get it into gear...so I drained it out and put synthetic 90w in...shifts fine cold now and no issues..

I have no issues shifting either of my 66 A833's with straight 140w in them....even when cold.....

I'm not convinced that I would put synthetic in the older stuff

I agree--  What's the point of putting something different in when there are no issues with what's recommended.  :shruggy:

The new synthetics may be just fine but the only difference one could see is how much you pay for no change in performance.
There is strong brand loyalty that goes with oils just as with the cars we put them in. If a chemist says one is better than another It's likely to be a technicality.  (kinda like how much rodent sh;t is in a can of chili.)  One brand could accept 3ppm and another 4ppm.

Too much information is not always a good thing. It could just muddy the stew  :Twocents:

I only thought of synthetics because people rave how good they are.

Ill stick with regulars, then again i have never heard of a bad oil per say either.

polywideblock

thought I read something about requiring "grooves" in stop rings to use synthetic oil

Tech Question

What transmission fluid do you recommend for A-833 4-speed od? I have 75/90 syntheyic hypoid gear oil in it now, but have heard reports that a synthetic oil could cause premature wear of the synchronizers cones, is this true? Norm

Wear? No, not true. But a fill with synthetic lubricant, without cutting the required grooves ("escape channels") in the stop rings, usually causes clashing and the resulting dog-tooth damage.

Use mineral 85W140.

Sounds good, i went ahead and just changed out rear diff with 80w-140 from walmart super tech oil.  Seems i was low i think I may have taken out 2 quarts didn't feel like much compared to what I put in, roughly 3.5 quarts or so from a  gallonj jug.  Test drove her no issues for 8 miles or so.

c00nhunterjoe

I run gl4 80/140 in mine. A little stiff til it warms up but speed shifts good with no noise.

1974dodgecharger

Just finished the tranny put in 80-90 put her in all the gears before I left.  She feels a tad smoother now than before.  When I drained both oils the oil stunk like shit and it was a dark brown color something like hot chocolate or so,but smelled really bad.
