trying to diagnose a problem  to get the parts before pulling gearbox out  .

it "jumps" out of second gear when using the engine to slow as you go around a corner . going up through the gears no problems, cruise in 4 or 3rd again no problems but if its in traffic and you are stuck at 20-25 and try to coast along in 2nd  or use the engine to slow down it goes bang jumps out of gear and won't go back in without grinding like an old fashioned crash box .does this sound like syncro's

I watched this video guys in U.K. and they describe exactly what you just said.  Go through the part where they start to build up the tall blonde hair guy talks about the shift mechanism.

It sounds like Syncros to me had couple 4 speeds do that to me usually in 2 gear when going slow and the Rpms are low.

that it exactly only does it in  2nd gear and only when "coasting" at low speed  in 2nd in traffic or when trying to go around corner  e.g. back to 3rd clutch out ,slowing back to 2nd clutch out as you go around corner bang and its out of gear  and won't go back in  :brickwall:

Hey Poly, a mates 440 Chally did it to me as well, gave me a hell of a fright just after I'd been leaning on it.
He said " oh, meant to tell you about that" between howls of laughter  :brickwall:
Syncho's he reckoned, he fried the clutch at the drags the other week too, so now it has to come out.

thanks guys  , so if I read the replies other thread  right it could be one of two things . the shifter or syncro's /slidders   2nd gear itself

i'v ordered a complete setup new from hurst shifters

                                                                              http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Pistol-Grip-4-Speed-Shifter-1970-1974-E-Body-Challenger-Cuda-71-74-B-Body-/281026605747?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item416e7db2b3

any thoughts ,tips tricks for an easy install   . will try new shifter first if this don't fix problem  i'll do the new syncro's and sliders  where would I get a "new " second gear ? everybody wants to sell me a "complete" gear set  :shruggy:

one last bit of info  i'v been having trouble with reverse in two ways  1: if you turn the car off with it in reverse it won't come out without starting car and getting it rolling backwards
2: you need a downward /sideways /forward "bang" with your hand to get it into reverse  just trying to depress and shift into reverse doesn't work

the reason they are trying to sell you complete sets as the second runs on another matched gear, if one's worn so will be the second gear mating , they are usally in matched machined sets, will most likely be noisy if unmatched

The snychros are not tge only thing that 'holds' the trans in gear. The little teeth commonly called "dogs" on the actual gear are cut with a taper. If some non driving idiot has consistantly ground 2nd gear, you will not solve this problem until the gear has been replaced.
This easy to spot when trans side cover is off. If the ends are ground up, the gear is junk.

I assume yours is the 23 spline unit and not the Hemi, If all 2nd gear ratios are the same across all 23 spline unit A833s, then yes. That is the gear, now you need the snchro as well.
