(or any other car for that matter) how long does it typically take them to go over your car?

Hey Ghoste,

Happy Tday. The biggest show/event around here is a four day fandango of all things classic car. The show and shine itself is two full days. This year there were 500+ cars, not all of them are there to be judged of course. They have a group of judges that look over the cars both days getting around in golf carts. By the second day they have the contenders narrowed down and revisit those cars again......sometime twice before the awards at 3pm. This is a big show with probably 25 different categories. At some shows I have go to they will place a peel-off color dot on your windshield or one of the headlights so you know you've won before the awards ceremony......I don't care for that myself. At the above mentioned show no one knows if their car won until the awards ceremony. Huge surprise and lots of fun.

Bottom line is it depends on the size of the show and whether is concours level judging or not.

I guess I was more curious about concours level but you brought up another point, how many people are usually in a team of judges at an oem style event?

Ghoste, the panel of judges went over my car for about 3-4 hours IIRC. There were about 3 judges.

Ghoste, at any concours shows I've attended there was a panel of about 4-5 judges. They were more concerned about presentation rather than "correctness". They probably went over the car for about 20 minutes.
OE judging was W-A-Y more strict and nerve-wracking. Car goes up on a lift for underside inspection, systems check, date codes, etc etc.

Yeah, I've been to a lot of concours events and watched, thats why my questions are more about the oem stuff.  When he said concours level before I guess I took it to mean top shelf in the muscle car world (which to me is the oem stuff) and not literally the concours shows.  I should be clearer shouldn't I?

You're very clear Ghoste. True concours judged shows like Pebble Beach, Santa Monica or Napa Country Club are indeed hardcore. They look for correctness in original unrestored "survivor" vehicle to include everything that came with the car.
Regarding those vehicles that have undergone restoration they are just as thorough. For example if a screw holding wheel opening molding isn't seated flush....points off. If that screw is seated but is slightly chewed to the touch or cloth test.....more points off.
For both these class of cars the inspections are top to bottom.

For me, what's the point of having any classic car that is so perfect I don't dare drive it?

Clear as crystal, Ghoste.

I agree with what Tom posted. There is a line where it goes from car to a piece of artwork. The way those cars are enjoyed is totally different. They become museum pieces.
I would dare say that very few "muscle cars" are found in this category, but more brass era stuff and exotic/antiques.

Are you asking how long it takes them at the Nationals?

Ghoste

Or Carlisle, but yes basically and how many to a car.  Someone did pm with a very good answer.  Have you had one done that way Danny?

bill440rt

There is no OE judging at Carlisle like there is at the Nats, Ghoste. They have a "Fun Field" with participant judging.
My first answer to you was my experience at the OE judging at the Nats. I guess I should have been more clear as well?

No I have not had a car judged anywhere. But Geno, and both John's had their Daytona's judged at the Nationals. I think it was about a 3-4 hour commitment. But honestly unless you have seen a car before I do not know how you could go over every inch of it that quick. Heck I gave been known to stand and look and photograph just areas of a car for 3-4 hours. Then again I am certifiably nuts according to most.

Ghoste

Thats why I wondered how many do it because it didn't seem like a long time to me either but what do I know?
