Whatever it is, it looks like this cat has done it before. It knew well enough to stay away from the crocs jaw.

I should have called it a panther but the word didn't come to mind so I went with with what did (come to mind) lol.

Is that how they kill all their prey? I thought cats went for the jugular.

Cats are cats.  I think they go for what they can get. Some get lucky and a neck bite works well. When they have the catch a neck bite is their kill bite.
As for piercing the brain?  These reptiles have small ones and lots of bone. It looks like a combination of surprise and muscle to me.

Jaguars have bigger rosettes than leopards. They are the third largest of the big four in cats. Next to the lion and tiger. They love water. The jaguar has an exceptionally powerful bite, even relative to the other big cats This allows it to pierce the shells of armored reptiles  and to employ an unusual killing method: it bites directly through the skull of prey between the ears to deliver a fatal bite to the brain. Cool video. Someone spent a lot of time to get that.

This would have to be  a lucky shot.  Animal Planet photographers say it's one of the hardest animals to get documentaries of.
