USB Charger & AUX Input in ashtray

Hey, Nothing ground breaker here, just thought I show how simple it is to put USB charger where the cigarette lighter is and a mini jack aux input next to it in the ashtray.

This allows me to charge my phone and connect it to my radio playing my mp3s or Pandora on the orginal radio (I converted the original radio to 4x45W fm and aux in at Ward's Classic Radio Repair (http://www.wardsclassiccarradiorepair.com/)).

I can even close the ashtray completely with only the cables sticking out when phone is connected, or if I want the original look I just stuff both cables inside in the ashtray and close it off.

twodko: I'm not sure what you mean by 'more details'. Is really not a whole lot to be said about this. I had it done at Audiologix in SF, since I don't have any tools. http://www.yelp.com/biz/audiologix-san-francisco. But anyone who has two thumbs can do this job.

Very nice!

I have an aux input jack in the same spot on my '69, and a iPhone/iPod jack in the console. Pics attached.

There's a converted thumbwheel radio in my '68, I simply ran a cable out the back of it and into the ashtray area where I can plug an iPod into. Just roll up the cable & stuff it inside when you're done just like you said.

Excellent, where did you get the USB plug, Wards?

I think you can get them at just about any electronics store can't you?

I always enjoy seeing how people have run their cables. I don't need a similar setup because I installed a Secret Radio system (Hidden Audio?...I forget the name) in my car. It looks like you have the same in your car by the looks of the display screen.
The I attached the bracket these screens are mounted in to the bottom edge of my ashtray. It's easy to access, looks minimal and clean plus if I open the ashtray the screen just tilt down with it. I refinished the ashtray so it's perfect even thought it was never used.
I have the iPOD and USB cable from the head unit in my console.
Banana Dan installed this same system in his car. I had seen others before at car shows and bought mine from a dealer in Texas. I installed it myself......I won't let anyone touch my car. Car stereo joints are infamous for hacking into OEM wiring.

Oh man twodko isn't that the truth.  I've seen a few radio installers who were conscientious and did real quality work but the vast majority seem to know next to nothing really about automotive wiring.  Soldering skills and drawing power from a correct point seem to be nonexistent in a lot of those jobs.

twodko: Sounds like you have a great setup. Can you please upload some pictures?

Thanks!

LOL
BananaDan installed a Secret Audio system in his car after seeing it in my '69.

My audio installation is detailed in this thread, begins on pg.4:

Then continues on pg.9:

Some guys have it installed by itself, I think Dan has his installed with one small amp but no subs.
Originally I was going to use the thumbwheel radio converted with modern internals, but there were problems with it communicating with the modern Alpine amps. So, I then decided to go with the Secret Audio unit. It's been great so far.
It's coupled with 2 Alpine amps, 2 subs, and 6 cabin speakers. Sounds awesome.

I'll see if I can find some pix to post up. I might have to shoot new......I changed from a PC to Mac and lost a bunch.

I also considered full on organ transplant for my OEM AM radio but just didn't want to d**k with it. I'm not running any external amps or a sub. Just 2 4.5" coaxial and 2 5x7" coaxial package tray speaks. The unit cranks fine for me.

Bottom line...........its all Banana Dan's fault.

Respect for that. My Charger is also my only car and daily drive, so being able to charge my phone and listen to music is a must :)

And back at you.  Plenty of room for both ways.  :yesnod:
