:drool5:   I have just caught this thread and I love it...This is what I want to do with my '71, but what is a welded K member?   ???
Work in progress...

Lightning

"welded K-member" = the K-frame, it supports the engine, and braces the entire front suspension.  With a little bit of grinding and welding, it can be made even stronger than stock.  there's a couple places that sell them in exchange for the old one, and there's other places that even make tubular ones to cut down the weight even more as well as be stronger.
when racing deals fall apart.....you go home, like me.

71ChargerRT

Do they weld around the seems? BTW, I do know what the K member is, I just didn't know what they welded

Lightning

yep, the seams I believe are usually the first things to get welded.

adding addtional bracing for the steering box mount & idler arm & engine mounts also

Mike DC

Yeah, it's mainly the steering stuff that benefits from some extra welding  In stock shape there was a fair amount of flexing around the steering box & arms.

It helps to add plating around the lower control arm mounting tubes, just as a preventative thing for the long-term survival of the mounts.  They're sometimes beginning to tear out on severely abused cars.

Can you guys tell me where I can find more info about the RMS' Alter-K uni? i saw the buildup in PHR with the Viper V-10 car...I am helping a friend build his 1968 RT clone...it's a 440 car now...he bought it from a guy who was supposed to build him this "show car"
well, he paid all the money and the guy delivered a car that has a $200 paint job and couldn't even run
Having never worked on mopar I was a bit concerned, but, got the thing fired up and running right in 1 afternoon...it's a nice car that we're gonna build into a "G-Machine"
I have done the same with 2 1st gen camaros and am excited about working on the charger (tons of room under there)
so, I would like to get some info from you guys on
1) suspension
2) brakes
I have looked at wilwood, baer, brembo, stainless steel, master power etc....seems like Wilwood is the only one with a 4 piston caliper for this car...I would like to run 13" front rotors...do you guys know of a company making a bolt on kit like that for these cars?
Also, is the alter-k member the way to go or can we upgrade stock to handle well? if so, whose kit? Global West doesn't advertise anything for this car
thanks guys
email me if you would like with tips or links: alilpsi@hotmail.com

First of all Rallyemike your charger is awesome, 160mph is no joke.  My car is a daily driver, but I have recently been looking into open road racing.  What would you recomend as some starting modifications?  All i have done so far handling wise is put KYBs all around.  What size torsion bar and leafs should I install?  Thanks for any help, also anyone know any tracks around southern CA?

There are a mess of folks from CA who run Open Road events. I would start by coming out and volunteering to be a course worker, hang out for a weekend, talk cars, and drink a few beers.   - or-   If you want to jump right in, install some low gears, make sure the mechanicals, cooling, bearings, suspension and steering are solid, get some tires and safety gear that meet the rules and run in the 85-100mph classes. It's very doable in a mechanically-fit stock vehicle at those speeds.  Heck, these guys took 1st place in the 85mph class last year at the Pony Express and had a ball (actually they took last place too!):

Pony Express, Battle Mtn NV Aug 25-27, only a week away  :boogie:

For anyone who cares for trivia: The turn around point of the Pony Express is at the junction of the two roads where in "Vanishing Point" the cop car rolls when taking the corner after chasing Kowalski through the little town (Austin NV).

Here is some pictures of the charger with the test fit of the Alterkation front suspension.  It really is a no hassle installation.

I will post some more when it comes back from the body shop.

I agree with ChargerHound, it really isn't a hassle at all. Me and a friend of mine are almost finished putting the Alterktion set up in my 68, and we're doing it with jack stands and an engine lift. We just suspended the engine in the air while we pulled the k-frame and put in the Alterktion, the rest is gravy. I'll post some pics when I'm completely finished. I ordered mine with the 13" rotors and 6 piston wilwoods, and it looks amazing, i cant wait to drive it around.

P.S. Bill Reilly seems to be a good guy, and knows his stuff. I've had a few questions along the way (while installing the Alterktion) and he's been able to get back to me quickly and knowledgably.

That is the truth, Bill will get back to you quick if you have any problems.  When I was ordering mine I had alot of different questions, and he had no problem making sure I got the right set up for what I am using it for.

This will start evolving shortly , it is already fast plain & simple , need to upgrade to the cage etc , I have upgraded the front disc brakes already & the power is there with a good 440  , it is geared 2.76 right now with an 8 3/4 diff

Mike DC

Ooohh  .  .  .  Nice color!

Is there some pearl in that blue or something?  It doesn't look quite 100% solid.
