hi i'm getting the auto electrician to "parallel wire " my charger as per  nacho's diagram      and am thinking of bypassing the ammeter at the same time and installing a volt meter . I know i'v missed something  :yesnod: how is the dash/gauges powered when you bypass ammeter as all gauges   are powered after it goes through ammeter ?  sorry for the dumb question just don't get electrics   :shruggy: , must have missed it at school

You just tie the two wires together and the gauge is out of the loop.  :2thumbs:

There are no "stupid" questions mate, only those not asked.

Hi,

If you're bypassing the ammeter and adding a voltmeter you really don't have to do the parallel wiring modification. There's no need in that case to run the high current wiring through the bulkhead connector pins or add parallel wiring around them. In this case I would simply run a new wire from the alternator output to the battery. It would be a good idea to use a high current fuse or fusible link in this line, its current rating would depend on the size of the alternator. I would then run another 10 gauge wire from the battery through a 50 amp fuse, through a grommet-ed hole in the firewall to the black wire that used to connect to the ammeter. This will power up the rest of the car as before. What you have done with this new wiring is completely bypassed two trouble spots the ammeter and bulkhead connector.
