Does anyone know what the measurement is on the thermal fan clutch? The height? In other words. from the fan mounting surface to the flange that goes against the pulley on the water pump. If there to tall or short the fan ends up to far in or out of the shroud. thanks ron

Superbirds didn't get the clutched fan, But anyone with a clutch should be able to assist. Both of my cars are direct drive fans so I cant help. :P
wingless now, but still around.

Actually - they originally did - the "070" clutch. It did get changed to a solid fan and spacer sometime during production.....and I think there was a bulletin to the dealers to change any 070 clutch fan assemblies to the solid setup. Been discussed a few times.

Redbird

Early cars got a clutched fan. One of the 2 cars adjacent to one of my cars sold at the height of the market, it was identical to my car except it had no tach and unrestored (underhood, paint, the whole deal), it had a clutched fan. Another car again identical to my car, and 3 serial numbers later, and almost completely unrestored had no clutched fan when it sold a few years ago and it was pretty darn original. Both cars were a couple of J#'s from my car.

I'm guessing that if cars were after #100-#150 on the NASCAR list or so they generally had a solid fan.

to throw even more confusion in here, didn't the bulletin say to change to a solid fan on 4bbl/auto ONLY cars?  I'm pretty sure I thought that was weird.

Both of my cars have solid fans, but who knows if someone threw the solid fan on the 4 speed car.

The first Superbirds had clutched drives.  To improve cooling, a solid drive fan was specified to be installed on all E86 (440-4 bbl) and E87 (440-6bbl) engines with the D32 (727 Automatic transmission) after Nov 5, 1969.
The fan was p/n 2863223 –  (7 blade,  18" diameter) and the last 2 digits "23" will be on the Broadcast Sheet.
A 1.06" spacer was used with the solid fan - p/n 1851959. The last 2 digits "59" are coded on the Broadcast sheet
