Hood Pins

I have been looking at a bunch of pictures in another thread, many with hood pins and saw differences in the cables.
My question is: where are the cables supposed to run through?
I have mine running through above the grille space in the bumper.  I have seen some that run just under the hood above the bumper.
What is correct?

They have a plastic coating.

I'm not sure why it's really any worse to have the cables attached to the hood itself on just a couple little inches of cable.  The hood still comes up if the pin breaks either way.

Some are attached to the hood, I think its just an appearance choice by the stylists.
