Speedo cable...

Looking forward to going home and spending quality time with the Charger since I've been in 'Vegas the past two months.  One of the issues I had was that my speedometer cable finally broke, and I didn't get the chance to fix it.  I bought the 61" (?) one from Mancini Racing and look forward to installing it, but I just wanted to make sure that all I have to do is: 1. unplug the old cable from the 'speedo and unscrew the other end from the 'trans and pull it out...  2.  Feed the new cable through the firewall, plug it into the 'speedo, and then screw the other end into the 'trans...

Is there a grommet or anything on the 'trans itself that I need to replace?  I seem to recall a bit of ATF leaking out where the old 'speedo cable screws into.  Any other quirks or oddities I might run into while I do this?  Do I need to pre-lube the inside of the cable with a dry powder or something?  Any input you guys have is appreciated...

There are 2 o-rings in the speedo gear housing, a big one around the housing and a small one that seals where the post of the Speedo gear comes through. You can run it with out the cable attached and it should not leak. You need to change the seals in the speedo gear housing.
The cable should come with lubricant.

Understood.  So asides from changing out the two seals I just plug the cable into the 'speedo and screw it into the 'trans?

Good time Myk to check speedo gear,
There only made of plastic, your changing speedo cable ? Because it wasn't working , mark housing so you put it in the same position

Yep that's pretty much it!  If you don't have A/C then you can do it without having to remove the cluster as well.  With A/C it's still possible but close the garage doors so the neighborhood kids don't learn any new words.   :D

The cable should also be secured by a metal folding tab low on the driver's side inner fender.  The positive battery cable runs down there as well.

Definitely get the correct pinion gear if your speedometer is off because of those monster wheels of yours.   :nana:

I'll try to post pictures later, but when the current 'speedo cable got pulled out of the 'trans because of the small leak I noticed, the....pointy part that goes into the 'trans itself was bent at a 45* angle.  Everyone told me that the 'speedo shouldn't even be working but it was.   :shruggy:  When I tried screwing it back in the 'speedo stopped working.

What's this about marking the housing?  Does it have to be oriented a certain way?

Hmmm...Well, the engine bay no longer has 'AC but the rest of the car is still set up for it-I don't recall being able to pull the 'speedo cable without pulling the dash-maybe I just didn't apply myself enough to it.  LOL @ monster wheels.  You know what?  Along with the power windows you've inspired me again; as soon as I get back to San Diego I'm going to make a new 'sig pic that showcases my "donk'ed" out '69 with monster wheels, ha ha...

The trans speedometer housing has numbers on it.  Actually they are ranges.  You need to check the number of teeth that are on the pinion gear and place it so it lines up with the correct range.  You'll see what I mean when you're ready to swap it.  It's pretty straight forward.
