misfiring plug or burned valve ?

I haven't done a compression test  or pulled the plugs yet but its popping down the exhaust. The engine doesn't idle like it should and intermittently  pops down the exhaust. Under load it doesn't usually  do it but sitting at a light or cruising it  will.. ideas ?

The popping in the exhaust means an over rich idle mixture, it's dumping unburned fuel into the hot manifolds and it's popping off.

Sounds like the plugs are fouled. Timing may be low or carb may be too rich. Pull all your plugs and if they are all black you have found some of your problem.

You could have lost a valve spring, lifter or have a rocker are issue.

I hate older and getting dumber than doggy doo. I pulled the plugs and the left bank was OK but not great. The right side ran from wet with gas to extremely white. Turns out the idle screw on the right side was backed out most of the way. Interesting how it got that way. :shruggy: Now I gotta blow the crap out of it.

Mine had same issue with carbon build up on the valves. Idleing too much not driven enough (my mechanic told me this thing has to be driven  lol  ).  he did the "cross the spark plug wires trick" backfired through the carb a few times.  put them back in the spots ran like a champ after.   i was going through plugs every month couldnt figuire it out.
