Month and day the engine was assembled.

D means 68 model year

My engine markings are interesting because I have an Aug. '67 casting date with the 'D 383' stamp at the distributor base. So it's a '67 motor installed in a '68 car.

Not really since about half of the 1968 Chargers were actually made in 1967 (model changeover was August I believe). What's the build date on your car? The stamping designated the model year the engine was built for but the casting says when it was actually made.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Jan. 8 is the build date. I know it isn't that uncommon because they did put a lot of '67 engines in '68 models, but like I said, it is interesting. I have discovered some other interesting things about the car because of my early '68 build date that I think were carried over from '67. I think it "should" have had a Hurst shifter instead of the Inland and it "should" have had shoulder belts. There are some other oddities but I think they are related more to it being a 383 2bbl 4speed car such as the HP manifold on one side but not the other and no stamp on the back of the block. It's not easy trying to sort this all out when the car has been messed with too. I have no build sheet so there are some mysteries.

Like we have said before, the 68 casting date on the ''side'' of the block can be from 2mo to 4 or 5mo before it was put in the car.
And the 2 26 numbers stamped into the flat pad that says D 383, are the numbers of when the engine was actually assembled.
And the assembly date of the engine before going into the car, is usually at least one month, I have seen then 3 and 4mo earlier
before though as well.

FYI from I've seen It's common for 2bbl cars to have the HP manifold on one side and LP on the other. It's not something you see every day because there are not that many 2bbl cars to be found anymore, and the ones that are around have usually been modified. I picked up a totally stock 71,000 mile 71 Satellite Sebring a couple years ago. The motor was completely untouched: It still had the valley pan sound deadener/insulation pack and the 1/2 HP exhaust manifolds in place.
