I went ahead and ordered me the mallory advance curve kit for my distributor and it takes all the guess work out of it. Got my initial timing at 17 and internal at 18 for a total of 35 degrees!!!
I haven't ran it hard yet but it is running good with the timing here!! Maybe no pinging at WOT and this will work great for me. If I have to I can drop it down inside the distributor to 16 and work my initial around that. So far its good tho!!  :icon_smile_big:

Ya, the Mallory kit works very nice and takes all of the guesswork out of limiting the mechanical advance. That kit will also work with the FireCore distributor as well which uses the Mallory advance system.  :2thumbs:

Let us know how it's running when you get it out   ;)

Will that Mallory advance kit work on the following Distributor?  I bought the MP Distributor P3690432 from Summit a few years ago, based on recommendations here.  It is still in the box as my engine build is in limbo.
Thank you.

Mallory started building  MP electronic OEM type replacements  late 03 I think , & from 2004  they all were Mallory units ,  although  there may well of been old stock hanging about  :scratchchin: :shruggy:

you can adjust the advance with out the keys ,  much easier with them , but it can be done with a degree wheel & attaching a point to the rotor arm , ( infact that's how I done mine first time , was over the  weekend 10 pm at night   :P  dialing new cams  initial timing & total mechanical !!  , had ordered the kit  couple of days before  , but could not wait  :P when using the degree wheel , its doubled on the crankshaft degrees , example 8 degrees on wheel = equals 16 on the crank

have a look at  pictures below  , that's  Mallory  advance guts ,  to see if yours is or is not one ,  remove cap look for torx screw see green arrow , might need to rotate distributor  to see them , also make sure  you use the correct size torx screwdriver , as the screw heads are shallow , even with the proper screwdriver , more than a few  slackening & tightening , easier to damage the head ,  best plan  swap the torxs screws out & replace them a suitable size Phillips , :Twocents:

going off subject a bit , found this a while back , good idea if you got the old style advance slots ,  can buy a disc with the correct size slots already made , saves loads of time  :yesnod: scroll down near bottom part number J685

tan top - I removed the Cap off the distributor and it looks somewhat different from yours.  I ordered it from Summit July 2008.
There is a opening that I can look into and as I rotate the shaft, I believe I can see TWO(2) screws, you may be referring to, 180 degrees apart.

OK

yep that's the same as mine   electronic MP432 distributor ,

I see now where the picture I posted its different  :shruggy: , no idea what that is in the picture , maybe one with out vacuum advance  :shruggy: , never noticed that was too busy looking for a picture that shows the mallory adjustment set up !!  second picture that shows the mechanical advance / springs , is identical though  :yesnod:

to gain access need to remove the reculator  carefull not to loose the roll pin ,  magnetic pickup &  vacuum advance , that can be fiddly though!  but straight forward

A383Wing

make sure if you pull the reluctor & roll pin, that you make sure you get the pin back in the same slot in the reluctor..there are 2 slots, one for big block, one for small block

john108

Now I am worried.  The Distributor has never been used and I do not know anything about the roll pin.  Where it is and where it should be?  I won't be ready for it for a while and when I do, I hope it is not like one of those boxes where you remove 1 screw and 20 springs and 1 roll pin jumps out.
Thank you
John

A383Wing

pull the rotor off and look down the shaft where reluctor slides on to....you will see roll pin that locks reluctor in place...just mark it somehow and put it back in the same slot...it's not like it will "pop" out at ya....it's gonna take some prying to get reluctor off...you will see when you pull rotor off

john108

You stated:  2 slots, one for big block, one for small block.

Is there something to tell be where it should be?  I bought it for a big block, 440+, but don't know what came in the box.

69wannabe

When you pry the reluctor off of the shaft you can see where the roll pin actually was so you know where it goes back on the shaft. The roll pin keeps the reluctor from spinning on the shaft and its not a big deal at all to get it back into place. The advance curve kit comes with the advance sticks that are numbered to tell you exactly where your mechanical advance is set and the springs are to change the rate of how fast your advance comes in. I left my springs alone since the paper said the springs that come in the distributor are good for street driven engines and that is where my car see's all of its drive time. Just had to limit my advance in order to get a good initinal timing number to get it running good. I haven't had a chance to drive it out since I set my distributor up since the weather turned pretty cool here and I been busy cleaning up the shop and finishing up a jeep wrangler I built the engine in. When I drove it a few weeks back I actually had the timing on 16 BTDC and had limited the advance due to pinging and it ran great but I had no idea where my timing was actually at. I knew it was advancing into the low 30's but not sure how far. When I got my kit I checked and it was pretty much at 18 mechanical so I set my initinal to 17 BTDC but haven't got a chance to drive it out yet. It should'nt be much different than where it was when we drove it out a few weeks back. These distributors are fairly simple and easy to tune and adjust so don't be afraid to dig in and do some fine tuning if you are not happy with the way it is or isn't performing. :yesnod:
