well as y'all know i changed my direction on the charger & cut in all the jams & started putting the car back together,i wanted to get it drivable, the old 383 sounded great so that was my plan,,to drive & work on it & build the 511 as money was available, well i worked on getting all my pulleys lined up & updated the alternator, was checking the timing & pulled the dist to recurve the advance, i found the oil pump drive bushing was wiped out & the cam is GRINDING away at the lifters
[ going flat ] ,so my charger project is done for awhile   :icon_smile_blackeye: :'( :'( :icon_smile_angry: :brickwall:

Man,  that is some really bad luck! Things will take a turn for the better, just keep a positive attitude and, "whatever you do, do not give up hope" (from the movie The Life Of Pi)!

I absolutely love Life of Pi; in addition to the great story it broke my preconception that any special-effects laden film will have a crappy story (Avatar, "new" Star Wars, you name it).

'OP, like Ron always says, now you have an excuse to tear it down and build it up to be stronger than ever!

charge69

Hello MYK,   The Life Of Pi  was a stunning movie that everyone I recommend seeing it to agrees!  I loved it too!  Charlie,  better days are down the road for you and your project.  May not seem like it now but,  it will happen.  Just have faith and, above all,  "do not give up hope"!

I know how you feel. When I first got my '68 in 2004 I planned on just getting it running and stopping so I could enjoy it a little before starting the restoration. Well that didn't go so well. There was a bad vibration somewhere that I couldn't find and all I ever got was one short drive around the neighborhood (maybe 1/2 mile) at about 5 mph. It felt like the crank was bent or way out of balance. So I sat on it for quite a while longer and finally started tearing it all down. During the tear down is when I found out that the bellhousing was simply loose at the block but it had done some damage. By then it was too late and I had committed to the resto.

Soon enough I realized you've just got to keep plugging away if you're ever going to realize your dream. It may come fast or it may be slow but it will come if you keep at it and never give up. Nothing worth having comes easy or quick.

What caused it to do that.? I feel for you.

the car sat non running since 1980 & i bought it in 2011,when the people i got it from got it running they should have pulled the intake & poured oil on the cam & primed the oil pump.

Damn, what a kick in the guts. Like bull said, just keep plugging away, just do what you can when you can afford it dollar or timewise. Make a plan and keep chipping.

For the record, I hated the pi movie, thought it was garbage, only went to see it 'cause my wife wanted to, she should've taken her mother and everyone would've been happy.  :yesnod:

Now, Rush, thats a good movie   :icon_smile_big:

the people on DC.COM are an awesome group of people, thank you so very much for the offers for parts,i think i am just gonna start slowly workin on the new engine, there are lots of things i can get back to while i save a little money for the build,i will start by finishing the port work on my cyl heads. i got them over a year ago & have only done one port,so that should keep me busy for awhile. only 15 ports to go & 7 combustion chambers.   :icon_smile_big:

thanx again for the support from a great bunch of guys.

Charlie, good chances that would not have helped. I am guessing they changed the oil, but did they add Zinc to the oil?  :scratchchin: If they used oil off the shelf and did not add zinc it was doomed. EPA made the oil company's remove zinc from oil for a Greener World.  :shruggy: For a roller lifter cam, not a problem. For flat tappets, flat cam.  :eek2: I stumbled across this post by accident.

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,46015.0.html

If you have read my post I stated my 68 Road Runner for the first time after letting her sit for 8 years. Luckily I found the above post. I preoiled the heck out of the motor, used break in lube on the cam and added zinc. Engine sounds great but now it is starting to tick some from the left bank. Hopping it is just the start of a header leak, but I have the flat cam fear.  ::)  Still wonder if I should have added more zinc. :scratchchin:

I may all so have a cam laying around you would be welcome to.

Good one ken , do a patch up on the old engine, first pull it and see how much that has travelled ,if crank surfaces not too bad through in a cam new lifters and rod bearings , flush out the oil gallerys best you can , you only want to enjoy it for the odd blast, or is this the block your going to use for the new build,
