As many of you know I had my 727 rebuilt a few weeks back but had some leaks in the transmission that I took in to get checked at the shop that did the work. On the way to the shop yesterday there was some weird noises and my speedo quit working and lots of smoke when I parked it at their shop.  They have a guy that does transmission work for them that actually worked on these cars when they were new   Anyway here is the photos of my tail stock with a hole in it from the governor grenading inside  :icon_smile_blackeye: What would cause it to fail? Unlike another shop that will remain unnamed this shop took care of it in 1 day and i drove the car home after work today  :2thumbs: I was so happy to get that phone call on my way home from work an hour ago   There are still good people out there that stand behind their work.

Been there done that.......  My buddy at the transmission shop asked me if I was "doing donuts in the rain?" ....."big monster power-braked burn outs?" I replied: Nope just driving, sometimes fast.  Then I reminded him I bought the car from him...after he drag raced for 8 years with it.  (He cut me major slack on the bill after that!)

A properly assembled governor should take an infinite amount of abuse; failures of that kind are usually caused by improperly installed snap rings and the failure usually occurs shortly after overhaul.

If the E-clip on the cross shaft isn't "seated" after installation it will often pop off shortly after the trans is put back in service and the governor guts fly out and cause collateral damage.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

John your the man , and I must be getting good , exactely what I was think when I looked at  this, improper seated snap ring, just finished my trans and always double check things like this ,
I'm glad this guy didn't install my uni's on drive shaft,

The pic below shows the E-clips installed on the governor cross shaft, the ring groove is wider than needed which allows the E-clip to be installed at one side of the groove or the other....if it's installed like the one on the left, the weight will slam against the E-clip and can cause it to pop off the shaft; if it's installed properly like the one on the right, it's already up against the outer shoulder of the groove and will remain in position when the weight hits it.
