Anyone using one of the edelbrock power package kits on their 440?
What sort of HP can you get stock from just putting these on?
Are they any good or are there better ways to get more HP?

myk

Depends on the internals of the 440.  Are we talking stock?  If so, from what year?  A stock 440 from the late 70's for example, would be a low compression model that wouldn't yield as much power as an earlier-configured 440, no matter what trick parts you bolt onto it...

not had any experience with  edelbrock set up my self , but read & heard , few guys disappointed with it !! having said that don't know if the combo was dialled in   tuning !  ignition timing /  carb jetting etc  converter ....  or even  what compression the motors was  :scratchchin:

I would wait to see whether you get a reply from some of the people here who know a lot about the cams and full set ups.  My impression is that the heads and intake are solid for most applications, but that there are better options for the cam.  I think the issue is that in making a selection of cam, intake, heads, you will need to know what else it is going to be paired with (auto/manual, gears, whether there are other draws on the engine and whether vacuum needs to be at a certain level to operate other things).

I am a little surprised the same cam is used for both the 440 and 383 in these kits because my impression is that the selection is often different because of the different stroke of the different engines.

Good luck and welcome.  I have found the folks here to be very helpful.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

The 440 does lend itself to the "blister pack" croud, but don't expect amazing gains. No you won't gain as much power from that 'kit' if you don't have the compression. Compression is power and with these old school engines, they don't have the benefit of electronic timing retards to make that 11.5:1 compression run on 87 octane with a turbocharger adding insane levels of boost to put 1500 hp at the wheels with VVT like newer cars have become.

Just today was helping a buddy set up his turbo on his car with VVT and the like. Today its all but stupid proof. The computer takes over when you are about to go 'boom' and backs the timing down. Gotta be on your toes with these old school engines, but I would think 500 hp is achievable from 10.0:1 compression 440 with the right camshaft.
