Metal Work on Body Almost Done!

I finally got the other quarter panel on, and the other rocker tacked into place.  Next week I should have that done and everything grinded smooth.  The last majpr body panel that needs to go on is the tail panel which will have to wait until the car is on it's wheels again.  I have alot of grinding to do, then prime the bottom, seam seal, seal and paint.  Color should be on the bottom and engine bay by the end of the month.  Then after that on to the fenders, doors, hood, and deck lid.  Here are some pics:

Looks good.  Should be ready for paint anytime now then.  What color are you going to shoot it??

That's one of the few 1/4 panel replacements I've seen that go over that top body line, that doesn't look easy. Was it rusty up there?

A body man did mine like that a few years ago, what a mess, I am going to try to save the old lip underneath, or go with a used full 1/4. The way he did it on my car threw all the doors and body line way off, now I got to do it right.

The upper part of the quarters were not int he best shape.  So what I did was sandblast the outer part, and clean the underside as best I could and coated the whole area under the quarter with Rust Encapsulator from Eastwood, then topcoated it.  I made about 20 measurements from various points on the body to the edge of the original quarter and marked them down in pencil on the car before I chopped it off.  I layed over the new skins, secured them in place with some sheetmetal screws and checked all the measurements.  Each one of them is right on the money down to a 16th of an inch.  I put some more screws in to ensure the skin wouldn't slip and began to weld.  I spent about 8 hours total on each quarter from fitment to finish welding.  I'm going to put a few more stitches on the edge of the new skin to the old, and grind everything down so that the edge of the new skin is near flush so I can feather edge in the filler a little easier.
My goal for the end of this month is to have the underside & engine bay done, reprime the whole underside, then seam seal it, then seal, and paint the bottom.  As for the color, Hemi Orange.

That's what I thought. So how do you deal with the lip of that skin sticking up above the original metal?

I'm going to grind it down to a beveled edge and put a swipe of filler over the length of the quarter and sand it until i'm happy with it. I came to the conclusion that the top of the quarter is easier to block down than the side of the quarter.  I'll still have to do some filler work along the side, but not near as much as if I were to weld the skin on the side.  I have no warpage problems at all on either side having welded it up top.

The guy that did the work on my mine did the same thing, looked like crap. Post results after paint, I want to see how it turns out. I like the color choice, same as what I am going to do!

I hope it works out. I don't know if I'd do it that way but it may be just fine.

I'm no expert but it looks like it's going to take a lot of bondo and a lot of sanding to get that right.
