I am confused about what engine was originally in my car.
The 1st line at the bottom of the fender tag is E56. This means 340-6barrel
Later on in that same line is the code J4G, J meaning 360? This code is also part of the vin.
So which is it?

The 5th digit of the vin will tell you what the car came with from the factory.. that should match the vin on the fender tag.

Moto codes change every so many years on most motors. Some motors are no longer made and some come into production. This makes stuff like "M" become a standard motor code from being a " V8 special order "
