I never thought the Fox body Mustang looked like a performance car. It looked like a glorified Ford Escort. At least GM's pony cars of the day looked nothing like a Cavalier. The Firebird especially looked like a performance car (which is why it was such a good fit in the show Knight Rider).

That's actually why I like it; it's an "understated," almost sleeper car, which is good on some days when I'm not in the mood for the drama that comes from driving a GM F body or the Charger...

this day and age every car is a sleeper its like having a all black car now everyone is doing it, nothing new.

Which is funny considering a bone stock Mustang out performed bone stock F-bodies.

And so I've just lit a new fire  :2thumbs: :flame: :D
Every great legend has it's humble beginning.

Fox body mustangs carry a certain amount of everybody wants to run you because of their rep drama.
Kinda like the 426 hemi. You get outrun in a hemi by a wedge and that hurts, but let a hemi outrun a wedge and everybody kinda just expects it...
Fox body's are kinda expected to tun like hell and there for a while, they were the benchmark to which all others were measured.
At least that's how it was when I had the white car on the street.

I can vouch for this.

Back in the day had a bone stock GTA TA 350 TPI with 3.42 gears. Wouldn't pull that hat off your head.
Traded for a 89 mustang Gt 5 speed with 3.55 gears, set of shorty headers and exhaust. Was like getting into a race car compared to that 350 TPI gm. Not to mention those era gm's you had to lay down to drive it.

All that said though from 79-86 only fox i liked was the pace car. 87-93 I will always have a soft spot for. This 82  gt yuk

I like understated cars, but when I think of understated, I think of something like a '68 or '69 Satellite / Road Runner. The problem I have with the Fox body Mustang bodystyle is not that it is understated, it is that it looks a lot like a glorified Escort (similar to the Mustang II looking a lot like a Pinto; in that case it pretty much was a Pinto in reality, so that's even worse). Not all of the Fox body Mustangs were even understated; the GTs weren't, yet they still looked like a glorified Escort, albeit a glorified Escort GT.
