The old 904 vs 727 question (smallblock)...

Of course being a new board its a new question...

Had a restoration guy come over and discussed plans and work scope for my Small Block Gen 3

This is what he recommended
1. The torsion bars; keep them they dont wear out, he will inspect them of course, but likely they will not need replacement.
2. Keep the TF 904 it can handle the 402 LA Stroker with a rebuild (he said the MP rebuild with kevlar parts). He said many racers (maybe my car will see the track 2-3 times a year) prefer the 904 becuase of its gearing.
3. Ditch the 8 1/4" rear for the 8 3/4". The 904 can handle it, but the 8 1/4" will not last long.
4. Do not use the energy suspension body mounts.
5. Get new MP leaf springs.

I am on his list (he has a year and half wait list) for him to do the body work. In the mean time I can take care of appropriating and doing the legwork for the components other than the body...

I am gonna start next with the tranny.
What do I need in addition to the MP rebuild kit P5007569 (and a NSS I believe was bad) for the 904.
Is this race rebuild kit OK for 85% street driving (Weekend cruiser)???

I intend to take the parts and the tranny to either to the Dodge Dealer or a transmission shop for rebuild.

Thanks In Advance

the 904 is better in a race car where milage is limited , for street use & occaisional track I would use a 727
I`m not at all impressed with the Mopar leafs , sagged very quickly on 2 e bodys

The thing I like about the 904 is the lower first and second gear ratios you can put in.
They really help a b-body small block. :Twocents:

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

I have seen built 904's in BB cars at the track. They are alot lighter & can take a beating. But for the street go stock 727

I agree with Neil.  The built 904 is a track piece.  Racing you need every advantage you can get and the 904 is lighter and has less parasitical hp loss than a 727.  Not much but enough to make a difference for those guys.  If gearing is an issue, you can get other ratios for the 727.  They aren't cheap, but building a 904 to last on the street is not going to be either.  The MP leaf springs are a waste of money unless you are flipping the car right away.
