73 SE's can drift

Hmm, is there a point to this ridiculous behavior?   :shruggy:

Bob

4200 pounds doing what 2800 pounds can do is pretty impressive.  :Twocents:

72Charger-SE

I am impressed with small area and that no sheet metal was damaged during the filming of this video...   Impressive!  I can't wait to do a 'donut' in my car and I am 100% certain it will be in the middle of a wide open parking lot!

myk

Drifting's not my thing either, but I admire the level of control and suspension tuning that goes into cars on their way to a drift track.  That being said, those people are suicidal-NUTS to be sitting in front of a 2 ton car that could easily be thrown into an unrecoverable move that could do a lot of damage.  Asides from the safety issue, drifting is most impressive with larger playing fields...

Ghoste

It is admirable to have that kind of control.  It looks fun too.

Mike DC

There's no point to driving 1/4 mile straight ahead or doing 200 laps around a closed oval, either.

ws23rt

It does look like fun.  A reminder of when my common sense was not full developed.
I see the crowd of people all around and that is all I am thinking about.  One false move on the drivers part and the car would hurt many or worse.

MaximRecoil

Low speed "drifting" in a parking lot? He's more or less just "doing donuts". Put him on a high speed track with tight corners and have him use his "drifting skills" to produce some good lap times, and then it will be impressive.

That's what I'm saying.  I'm not much into 1/4 miler's either, but at least you can watch the cars blast from one end of a track to another; same thing with oval/course racing...

chargd72

There are very few people on this entire site that could do what he did without hitting one of those barrels or wrecking their car.

Just because he's not going fast doesn't mean that what he's doing doesn't require skills.. Maybe you'd like to post a video of yourself doing the same, in the same confined space?

All I could think of is - - "what if he went out of control"?  :smilie_help:

People seemed very close to the area :badidea:

It would be very dangerous if the car suddenly drifted into spectators.  :scared:

Other than that, it was good driving!  :2thumbs:

Probably a good way to find out if your oiling system is any good, or not.

That is excellent car control considering the heavy car and confined space.

"Skill" that's acquired in a matter of minutes, i.e., the amount of time it takes to get a feel for how the car responds when "doing donuts" (or "half donuts").

QuoteMaybe you'd like to post a video of yourself doing the same, in the same confined space?

Sure, if you want to supply the car, location, obstacles, video equipment, and pay me enough money to make it worth my time to do something I have absolutely no interest in doing otherwise.

I agree---"doing a donuts" is just hit the gas and turn the wheel.   But to connect several together in a tight figure eight is not easy especially with a car like that.

Ask any drifter or stuntdriver, and they'll tell you that in order to do it so fluently, and so many consecutive times, it requires a lot of training. I showed the videos to my former boss, who drives rallycars, and he concurs..

So I guess that's a "no" for the last part...

That is very impressive. Sliding a big heavy car around like he is doing is not easy. I give the driver an "A". As for the spectators, if they are brave enough to stand there, they are dumb enough to get hurt. Natural selection?

"Training"? I don't think so. A little bit of trial and error practice is all that is needed. Low speed = plenty of time to think about it / react compared to a high speed track with tight corners.

QuoteSo I guess that's a "no" for the last part...

You either need to read what I wrote again, or refamiliarize yourself with the definition of the word "no". I actually said "sure" (which doesn't mean "no"), but there are stipulations which I listed. So whether or not the video gets made depends entirely on you.

Quote from: ws23rt on September 22, 2013, 09:26:46 AM

And doing a "figure eight" is just:

1. "Hit the gas and turn the wheel"
2. "Hit the gas and turn the wheel" ... the other way

Once you know how the car responds, it isn't rocket science to "do donuts" to get around obstacles at low speed. The weight of the car is irrelevant at such low speeds, given that it isn't a variable. Somehow make the weight a wildly and randomly changing variable in between each "donut", and then it would be impressive, even at low speed.

At much higher speeds, weight could become a factor (along with other characteristics of the car, particularly suspension design), because it could make the car uncontrollable when attempting some maneuvers, no matter how much skill you have.

To be impressive you have to turn the poor guy from doing donuts into a race car driver?

So in one sentence you say the skill can be learned in minutes.  Then you follow up with some impossible to meet criteria.

There is no "impossible to meet criteria" in my post, which negates your first sentence (so consider it dismissed), nor would it be relevant if there was, which negates your second sentence (so consider it dismissed as well).

Quote:rofl:

Likewise, but for a valid reason. Your "error with confidence" (see above) is comical. In fact, "error with confidence" is a tried-and-true building block of comedy. For example:

Beavis: "What did people do before they had TV?"
Butt-Head: "Don't be stupid Beavis, there's always been TV! There's just a lot more channels now."

I'm not a "new person" and it takes more than one person to argue. I've always posted in the same manner here (as well as on other forums), but it was only recently (after being here for a couple of years and a few hundred posts) that a significant argument happened (over relays in a Mopar HEI conversion). I picked up some ankle biters in that argument. It is very common to pick up an ankle biter or two after a lengthy forum argument; sometimes they remain as your ankle biter for years, forever trying to finally "win". Ankle biters keep the arguments rolling. "69finder" is my newest ankle biter, time will tell if he can go the distance. See his post in this thread for a textbook example of how ankle biters operate.

It is much better if we try to be very civil to each other and get along. If sarcasm is suspected just take it in stride because the typed word can be easily mis interpreted.

I tried my hand at Auto Cross this year at MATS. It is not easy trying to keep a big heavy car in control and going in the direction you want it to go while fighting for grip on the pavement, and without hitting anything. I had a lot more room on the course than this guy has around barrels. He gets my respect.

Quote from: ws23rt on September 24, 2013, 06:42:01 PM

I suppose I am one of your "ankle biters".

Yes, one of many across many forums. Here is how to identify an ankle biter:

1. First-replies to you far more often than you first-reply to him.
2. Usually replies in an ad hominem manner, rather than legitimately addressing the content of your posts.

"69finder" is a wonderful textbook example of an ankle biter. You're a borderline example.

QuoteYou do always post in the same manner.  It does take more than one to argue and you are lurking around endlessly looking for that one to argue with.

The bolded part is false. I don't look for arguments on this forum, but I'll always argue if someone else wants to (because arguing is entertaining, at least when done correctly). If someone posts that 2+2=5, and I post that it actually =4, that isn't looking for an argument, it is simply correcting an error with a fact. It will only turn into an argument if the other person is too dense to recognize a fact when he sees one.

QuoteIn your process you have made a long list of new friends. (You listed them on another thread)

Whatever you're talking about here, it is irrelevant. I don't consider online forums populated with total strangers to be a social hall. Forums like this one and most others I post on are an information exchange.

QuoteTo you someone that is an "ankle biter" is "forever trying to finally win"  This speaks to how you see them and why you engage them.

By definition, an ankle biter first engages me, not the other way around. I don't first engage anyone, I only ever first-engage post content, without regard to who the poster is (because I couldn't care less who the poster is).

QuoteYour observation of your newest "ankle biter"  And your wondering whether he will go the distance describes your motive rather clearly.

My "motive"? No. As I said, I don't first-engage anyone here, ever, so whether or not he becomes a dedicated long-term ankle biter depends entirely on how deep his obsession with me runs.

QuoteYou also have used the term "how the game is played" many times.

That refers to arguments, which are analogous to a game of strategy. Ankle biters don't know how to play the game properly. All they do is throw paper cups from the sidelines.

QuoteI may be one of your least favorite "ankle biters" because I usually ask you questions that you will not answer.  You dismiss as irrelevant, Say it is out in left field, etc.  Cherry picking your responses puts you in the drivers seat.

I don't have any favorite or least favorite ankle biters. Ankle biters are an inevitable byproduct of online arguments. It is certainly nothing I lose sleep over. Also, since your mischaracterization of how I reply to you and others who don't know how to argue has already been pointed out more than once, consider it dismissed.

QuoteGaining respect, fitting in, accepting alternate points of view, etc.  Are things you have told the many people that read this, are of no interest to you.

With regard to "Gaining respect, fitting in"; caring about that sort of thing is the result of a herd mentality, which I neither have nor want. With regard to "accepting alternate points of view", I only accept points of view that have a solid basis, "alternate" or otherwise.

QuoteYou have told us many times on several threads by the way you talk to responders.  (Which by the way are strangers and you have no way of knowing if their responses are setting you up or not :icon_smile_wink:)

Ah, the classic ad hoc "I'm baiting you" tactic. I'll let you in on a "secret": bait without a trap is just free food, and there isn't an ankle biter in existence who ever had a trap to go along with his "bait".

Fred

In case anybody was wondering..............

Ad hominem

An ad hominem (Latin for "to the man" or "to the person"[1]), short for argumentum ad hominem, is an argument made personally against an opponent instead of against their argument.[2] Ad hominem reasoning is normally described as an informal fallacy,[3][4][5] more precisely an irrelevance.

Though you've been "monkey seeing, monkey doing" "*Ching*" lately, you don't even have the slightest idea of what it means.

I hope it's not dead yet. my goal is for 57 more views and 37 replies. That will give me 1,000 views and 100 replies. This will be my all time personal best for any car site.

Getting the replies needed for your milestone should be easy.  The question is would it happen before the thread gets locked?
And the end result wont be a work of art.

I will help by not helping :smilielol:

I don't think it will get locked since I believe they are genuinely good people and if they were to meet outside of this forum they would actually get along.

Come on now 69----There are many here that have thoughts about the situation but this is a public place.

'I couldn't care less' is horrible grammar.  It means you actually do care more.

Still LOL @ that, and LOL @ you too, you know, while I'm at it.

The term 'I could care less' is actually one of my pet peeves..  I'm surprised how many professional writers get it wrong too!  I would normally keep this to myself but since this thread has been derailed already I figured I'd vent a little.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with anyone either!
