109K MILES !  :eek2: has the old school bastard fuel system too, $1,800 car max  :yesnod:

Take this car to auction in my area, and it'd bring $2500 to $3000, no kidding.  The Mexicans would love it.  Put 20's on it, and the owner could be pimping around KC.

Not to sound like a jerk, but I bet even the Mexicans have to draw the line somewhere.  Ford or.....some other agency with more money than it knows what to do with should pick that up and....display it or something...

Baldwinvette77

i actually worked on one of these about 2 months at my job, replaced an alternator for a lil ole lady, i told her "its a nice car" she said, "oh dont give me that, i just keep it because i cant afford a new car" no kidding

TUFCAT

It could be worth as much as $15,000 to the "right collector".  There's a growing market for well preserved examples of late 70's through 80's luxury barges, but the mileage will absolutely kill this one.

That car is in the running for having the most generic looking body style ever designed. No Bézier curve tool needed at the drawing board for that design; just a good old ruler and compass (mostly a ruler). It could have even been done on an Etch A Sketch pretty easily.

Other cars in the running are all from the same era, e.g., K-car, Diplomat, Caprice, St. Regis, Crown Victoria.

The way he's taken care of that car over the years, you'd think it was a Hemi 'Cuda. Unfortunately for him, it is just an el generico '85 Lincoln Town Car that probably handles like a steamroller on greased glass, and isn't worth more than several thousand dollars to most people even if it was NOS.

Someone out there is gonna love it.  :yesnod:     That person is just not me.   :rotz:

PROVEN FACT: save all paper from dealerships, signatures, etc..and you increase the value 10 fold thats why so many folks are doing it now to new chargers/chalelngers/ minivans/ saturns they save everthing  and try to perseve it all such as the 'ink' on the papers to increase its value on cars.  :2thumbs:

Problem with the new every day muscle cars is that everyone is doing it.   I guess it can't hurt.   But every car will be "documented".

Did you notice in the later pictures how much stuff he had to replace. No wonder the outrageous price. He's trying to re-coupe his losses.

A thread on the Lincoln forum had mentioned that he had upgraded the car with a lot of NOS stuff once he decided to take it to the next level.

Exactly. Most things that are "collectible" were never intended to be. They were just things.
Today's items that are marketed as "collectible" or instant classics may not be as such in the future.

That car is nothing special, but treated special. Unfortunately all the love in the world can't make it look more attractive...
Maybe it's good for the movie scene... 1980's mobster flicks?
Also, I think a diplomat looks better then that by far.

YUP, I know many folks right now who are doing it their chargers/challengers I personally know one guy with a 08 charger he has saved every paper from this dealership, took pics of the dealership, where it was parked at the dealership, photos of the manager, salesman, etc...every little detail when he got it in 08 off the lot.  Till this day he tells me his 'charger' is the most documented car available and worth at least 80k he claims.  He had a craigs ad up awhile back last year asking 80k for it and claims 'appraiser' valued it at such price.  He does not drive it either he probably now has 3k miles on it.....thats it and garages it for that special day when he can put it on barret jackson auction block.  ::)

I don't even think "Stupid" money would pay 29K for that car.  Stuff like this hurts me...  I had a long drawn out reply to this from my Ford guy's perspective, but I've lost the will and the energy to continue...  This emoticon will have to suffice => :RantExplode:

My dad is the sole owner of a 1978 Town Car with 15,000 original miles. It has been stored since new and has a 460. It's original minus a fuel filter and one battery cable. I don't think it would bring half of what he wants for that one. On second thought, maybe call Gas Monkey.

How did  your dad's  car come to sitting in storage all of this time?

I don't see much of a difference in bodystyle design philosophy:

Though Ford beat out Chrysler in the "Let's See Who Can Make the Straightest Lines" competition, but only by a hair.

Yea they are basically both 1980's boxy designs, although the lincoln has a longer unproportional hood. Also  a crap taillight design.
Although you posted a chrysler 5th ave in the pic, a Diplomat or gran fury police cruiser is a better looker then the Chrysler.
Plus I'm a mopar guy... do you really expect me to say a ford is better?? Haha

I agree that the basic Diplomat is better looking than the New Yorker / Fifth Avenue, but the '80s Panther body LTD / Crown Victoria is also better looking than that Lincoln in my opinion too.

However, I don't think any of those '80s rolling boxes look good. For a 4-door police cruiser type sedan, nothing beats a '68 or '69 Belvedere / Satellite as far as I'm concerned. Next would be the 1971 Coronet / Satellite body style, which got reused under various names throughout the '70s (probably most famously in the case of the hundreds of '78 Furys they used on The Dukes of Hazzard).

Yep, I do agree... isn't it funny how the more luxury version often= worse dessign for us car guys.

A cop car that's essentially a 4-door Road Runner ... how can you beat that?

wingcar

Being old doesn't make a car a "Collector Vehicle"...collectors do, and how they perceive its value.  It's only worth what someone is willing to pay.  Sadly the general public doesn't understand the whole collector car thing, which is why the owner of a high mileage, rusted out 318 Charger feels his car is worth big dollars after seeing what a similar year Charger went for at the last Barrett/Jackson Auction.  (Never mind that the car at the Auction was low mileage fully restored (or survivor) Hemi Car with rare options.....or whatever)

*I sold a Hemi Superbird back in the mid 70's and couldn't get much more than what a regular Hemi RoadRunner was going for, in fact many wouldn't even look at it because it looked "funny"....boy how times have changed.

*I purchased a 2008 Challenger (Numbered)...will it be worth big bucks in the future?  Who knows?  But I do know that I am driving and enjoying the car (as I did with the Superbird back in the day) not letting it collect dust in the garage hoping it will increase in value someday. I brought it for my enjoyment, not for some future collector to park in his garage.  Just my two cents.......

Exactly, you'd have to specifically want a town car...  AND WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANTS AN 80's TOWN CAR?!?!  :flame:

For that boxy 80's body style, your best bet was always an 80's G-body.  Even their full sizers looked easily better then anything offered by Ford or Chrysler...  :Twocents:
