I wish I knew about this when I put my sending unit in.  My gauge reads about 1/2 when the tank is full.
There were no instructions that came with mine.  (from year one).

It took a bit of trial & error, but I just bent the float arm a little to get it to read right. 
I did this with different amounts of gas in the tank. 1/4 tank, test. Drain. 1/2 tank, test. Drain. 3/4 tank, test, drain. Etc, until it was done.
Took a little while, yes it's messy, and it goes without saying it's best to do it outside.
