Car club run to an Aviation Hall/Museum Auckland NZ - old aeroplane pics

We did a run and parkup to a local Transport Museum, out the back is the Aviation Hall, some very cool old planes in there, the volunteers have been restoring them as funds permit.

The Avaitation hall is fairly big and the standard of restored planes is high. All donated after expiry of service

This weird shaped "fish'' plane is Australian built of French design and the door entry is in the rear, used for top dressing fertilzer, fairly common in the 70's, I used to see them above the neighbours farm

This would be one of my favourites, a Sunderlands Flying boat, it used to do the ''Coral Route" Pacific Islands route in the 50's and 60's, it probably was rock star money to get a passage on that I expect

Just got done reading an article on a war bird boneyard that existed in Rukuhia, New Zealand from wars end up into the seventies, hundreds of P-40's, F4U's and Hudson's that most wound up in the smelter.

This museum on the south island??   We took a tour a couple of years ago and went thru a airplane museum there.   Seem to remember that Peter Jackson had something to do with it.

Just notice the title, so this was on the north island.   Beautiful planes.  Too bad I missed it.

Just got done reading an article on a war bird boneyard that existed in Rukuhia, New Zealand from wars end up into the seventies, hundreds of P-40's, F4U's and Hudson's that most wound up in the smelter.

Did'nt know that, thanks John, I will see what I can find out about that locally. I did some work at a local airfield a couple of years back and had to access a block of privately owned hangars for the cable routes, obviously no photos allowed but there were some very rare planes, most were airworthy.
Just along from there is the Spitfire that was restored and the DC3 that does scenic flights around the city, pretty cool

Yeah it was at Motat, Western Springs. Defintely worth a look.

Sure was. And all that experience out the door in an instant. Terrible decision by the govt of the day...Now they just really have Orions for search at sea work and a handfull of I dont know what jets and maybe a couple of coptors on the frigates when they are on active service.
